On the morning of the rampage, both of Ethan's parents were summoned to their son's school after teachers discovered violent messages and drawings on his schoolwork, prosecutors said during the trials.

The Crumbleys were told Ethan needed immediate counseling. But prosecutors said the couple resisted, taking the teen home that day, and didn't search his backpack or ask him about the gun they knew he could access.

Ethan Crumbley was returned to class. He later walked out of a bathroom with the gun and began firing, according to prosecutors.

I presume this is why they got charged? That and easy access to a gun. Usually parents aren't charged this way if their child becomes a school shooter.

Fuck em. In some ways I think they are kinda more to blame than their son. He tried to get someone to stop him. But nobody was paying attention

They bought him the gun. They refused to get him mental health treatment. They didn't spend much time with him. They didn't keep an eye on how he was doing. They didn't care

Yeah, it's not unheard of for an adult to essentially buy a gun for their child. The key difference being it's for teaching them how to safely handle, use, and respect it. It's also usually locked away to some degree.

I recall they did something 'similiar', but without the whole safety aspect, by essentially buying a gun for him, knowing he had issues/concerns, and still didn't do anything to prevent/mitigate it. They actually took extra steps in being reckless/stupid, compared to someone having their kid defeat their security methods.

At first I thought this was kinda bullshit but after learning about the multiple blatant opportunities they had to stop this from happening that they ignored or downplayed it's extremely fair, next.

Yeah, their wilful negligence resulted in a lot of people dying. It's fair to lay a significant part of the blame on them for what happened.

These parents acted so inappropriately and obtuse to what their son was up too even after being given warnings they deserve a punishment. I mean they were more concerned with getting back to work and didn't even bother to put two and two together that hey, we just purchased our son a gun and he was drawing and writing about violent stuff..

With that said, I'm pretty sure like most other things this will lead to other people being punished even if they didn't have any warnings, or the chance to stop things from happening.. which will lead to people being punished for others actions, which really shouldn't happen at all, as one person can't really control another persons actions..

could the school have legally searched his backpack? How could they have known he had a gun, IIRC the parents didn't even inform the school they purchased him a gun and he would have had access to it..

If you can't see how this could start seeing people held accountable for others crimes then I don't know what to tell you.. I could go and explain a hundred different situations where something like this could be used as precedent to hold people accountable for another persons' crime but what's the point it would be completely hypothetical until it actually happens..

These parents deserved it,

They wouldn't legally be able to search him unless they had suspicion that he was carrying out/about to carry out an illegal act. And that's beside the fact the kid was sent home with the parents and the parents sent him back (from what I understand the kid didn't have the gun the first time).

Different theories (felony murder and aiding/abetting) that aren't apposite here. This case is essentially one of criminal negligence, which is more appropriately described as recklessness/reckless indifference.

Edit: And yeah, post 22 completely missed the mark on the rationale of the indictments and verdicts.

I LOVE to see it. Love it. Regardless if you can/can't hold the kid accountable (because they are dead), hold the parents accountable. I know this cannot be the common place every time, but I love that it happened this time.
