Its just so easy to make and weirdly popular so theyre gonna keep doing it until people stop watching it

oddly enough this one wasn't an isekai, just a fantasy show.

shield hero had this, and I don't get it because it does nothing for the show. They could have met in so many better ways.

Building a girlfriend gynoid is better than this. You can even make her an elf if you want.

It's a common fantasy generally. Either owning or being owned.

It's a pretty common fantasy, especially for the kind of people who feel like they're not able to get a girlfriend. It's very blatantly targeted toward the stereotypical 'single male aged 13-35 who can't get a date' which many 'romance' anime are aimed at.

They get very strange if you look too closely. There's a reason I only really watch battle shonen.

But that makes someone look pathetic , why wouldn't they want a girl just to love them.

aside from the horny fantasy part of it (I have no doubt this is some of it) it also has some story functionality too

1) easy way to introduce characters to each other and have them stick together without needing a more complex hook/backstory
2) everyone's familiar with it by now so it's a setting easily grasped at a glance
3) allows you to have a "bad guy" protagonist but still not have him be totally bad since at least he treats his slaves nicely
4) does fit in how the world is set up since usually these sorts of magical fantasy settings with a bunch of non-human races have tons of casual racism everyhwere

I believe the gimmick of these premises is that so long as youre a good slaver that treats them well enough to love it or at least prefer the MC as their owner then its acceptable?

I get theres audience for this kind of thing but Im surprised how much more popular its become in recent years.

I mean, it's Japan, what did you expect?

There arent really any series that treats the slaves like actual slaves. Not even Redo of Healer.

I do wonder how Shield Hero got as popular as it did in the mainstream though, given how prominent of a plot point it was. To the point that they tried to justify it as better for leveling.

Like I said, it's a common fantasy and writers will bend over backwards to try to remove all the excessive baggage while keeping the fantasy of it.

If this were porn we would shrug and move on but because it's not, it opens itself up to bigger scrutiny. It isn't so much a new thing but as "wish fulfillment" anime becomes normal, it's not surprising that this trope is used more often.
