He makes a crappy job interesting and wants it to be successful because he genuinely loves the company.

His job as manager is okay, his ability to sell is out of this world.

I hated that character so much, I thought he was so unrealistically incompetent, they lost me... he's a mix of vanity, stupidity, and inconsistent levels of sanity and random personality type depending on the episode.

True, he sold $1 million worth of paper to Bill Buttlicker just because he liked the sound of his voice.

Kinda.

He mostly stayed out of peoples ways, didn't micromanage all that much, as well as putting people in positions they could excel at, and while he was responsible for some chaos, he also harbored a fun working environment that made the mundane reality of a paper company seem more entertaining than it could ever be.

That seems to be in spite of him. Dwight is consistently shown to be the best paper salesperson in the company driving up his branch's numbers.

He was a great sales man and people person, but terribly incompetent at man managing his branch. That being said, he was doing something right if he was able to keep the Scranton branch afloat while all the other branches were shutting down.

Management at a company tends to waste employees time and lower productivity

when Michael does it, its sometimes interesting at least

he has shit conflict resolution skills and antagonises HR for no reason

hes not the worst manager honestly

He was a fantastic salesman who was promoted outside of his competence because the higher-ups aren't good at realizing that "good at one thing" and "good at something else entirely" aren't synonymous.

So yes.

Nope not how the real world or the fictional world works. His job was to meet and exceed sales targets, fun is just byproduct of his personality defects... I mean quirks.

He also made narcissism funny (then Trump ruined it by being fucking awful).

The best description of Michael is that "he needed to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral." It's so true. He ruined Phyllis' wedding, the baptism of Jim and Pam's baby, etc.

He can be at times. The episode where they brought in Timothy Olyphant and all the other sales people were freaking out he actually puts on his management pants and lays down the law. Also when he has to put Stanley in his place.
