Sony Interactive Entertainment and Shift Ups upcoming action adventure game, Stellar Blade, suffers from a high amount of input lag.
Using a high speed camera, YouTuber MierdaMeGusta performed an input lag test on the recently released Stellar Blade demo to measure the delay between controller input and the action beginning on-screen. Based on their findings, the game suffers from 13.8 frames or 230 ms of latency in Performance mode, which is very high for a game that runs at 60 fps.

I'm not sure if it's an issue with Stellar Blade, but the TV/Game mode is a stupid feature in the first place, and I sometimes wonder how many people don't even realize it's set to that.

14 frames of delay is insane in an action game

If you read this signature, then that meant that I had control of what you read for 5 SECONDS!!

My sister and BiL had that frame rate smoothing shit on their TV the first few months I moved in. They didn't even know what I was talking about when I brought it up. I stealth changed it all to game mode and they have noticed 0 difference and haven't said anything about it

I noticed it immediately. The input lag and how locking on forces you to walk is a big part of why the game is disappointingly clunky

I thought it looked like it had potential but it doesn't feel great to actually play unfortunately.

But then again the people most hyped about it don't care about the gameplay so it's probably fine.

Yup. One of my buddies went his friend's house, and his PS4 was set to that, and was surprised at how much better they played after changing it. They went through two console generations of 10+ second input delay on every game.

Have not noticed anything myself either. Took some time to get the parry timing right, but I can't complain anymore when I'm already pretty decent at it after a short time.

But this "game mode" on TV is some real thing.

I remember bringing my switch + docking station to a buddy, and Smash was borderline unplayable until we used the gaming mode on TV.

For fun I started up Theathrythm, and it was literally unplayable.

No idea what the technical reason is for TVs to have such a delay by default.

Games require a much higher interactivity than is normally expected from your TV. Normally they "underclock" (it's more complicated than that, but whatever) to keep the TV's lifespan as high as it can be, which hits games pretty bad.

Your TV should be in game mode or whatever allm it can do.

A game requiring it is another thing.

Post processing. Game mode will look worse because it will disable most of it.

Huh. I was gonna consider a demo, but 13 frames of lag? That's downright unplayable.

What causes delay lag
Usually it's the frame and speed of the game vs. the speed and frame rate of your TV, which aren't designed with games in mind, per se. Hence "game mode" setting, which does either sync or "upscales" the rate, for lack of better word. This is why gaming desktop monitors make a point to point out their frame rate, refresh rate, etc. And why GPUs can sync all of this together.

A good example of where this could be a problem was Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which suffered input lag when using modern TVs of the time (the first smart TVs) compared to traditional/CRTs at the time. And early game modes weren't as good as syncing as they are now. And for a game as twitchy as Smash, input lag is noticeable and detrimental.

But a game requiring game mode? That's just trash game design.
