For Paradox, the future ones are mostly bad but the past ones are mostly good. At the very least, the names are great. Scream Tail.

The names are my least favorite part, honestly. There may be no greater indicator of the loss of creativity in Pokemon than the fact that we've started naming stuff "Adjective Noun."

Most of the Pokemon in the generation aren't that, though? Paradoxes are supposed to be weird and unlike other Pokemon.

I agree that the Iron names are very boring, and a little confusing to differentiate at the start of the gen too. At least give them names of different metals!

You bring up some gen 1 also had issues point all the time. No one even disagreed, let the people criticize things that are newer than that.

Paradox names are awful, in particular future ones imo.

past ones are fine and make sense tbqh

future ones all just being Iron Crap is terrible though

"Pokemon isn't creative anymore" is a take I'm always going to dunk on, because it's stupid, and you can't stop me

(I would have changed the iron names though, they're too easy to get confused with each other)

It's just not a statement that says they were more creative in the first try. It just says they have been more creative.

I do think it's interesting that they chose to go with the two word names for the paradox mons. They remind me of the codenames of the Ultra Beasts, but they got 'real' names to go alongside them.

It's a Pokemon in the past. "Adjective Noun" makes perfect sense for naming.

Even Koraidon and Miraidon have both codenames and proper names, so it makes it all the stranger that the rest of the Paradoxes don't.

The 'iron' names I think are really a lost in translation thing. They're direct translations of the Japanese names (ie Tetsu-no-X, where X is a three syllable word) which have a much better flow and mouth feel than the english versions, even if the meanings are the same.

This feels like a genre thing too, like that name more strongly implies a 'mecha anime' feel to me than the english names do. just kind of a hunch on this

Japanese has had similar style names since Gen 1, they just decided to localize it more literally for the Paradox Pokemon. I think it kind of works though

Just because there's an in-game explanation for it, doesn't mean it was a good decision. They knew better than to market the box legendaries as Winged King and Iron Serpent, so they should've applied that reasoning to the rest of them.

I played Scarlet and didn't even know that Koraidon was named Winged King.

I would never have guessed that criticizing Pokemon names would invite so much vitriol. For the record, I'm very far from a Genwunner and think Seel is a stupid name as well - or hell, even a Mon I otherwise love like Ninetales. And having a lore reason for something in a video game doesn't just automatically and inherently make it not dumb.

I would contend that portmanteaus are still marginally more clever than just picking a couple of words and putting a space between them. Something like Arcanine may not be the absolute peak of creativity, but it's better than Blazing Hound.

IIRC it was just an extra detail mentioned in either their Pokedex entries or the Scarlet/Violet Book.

Arcanine is fine. It's stuff like Talonflame that's the most "lazy" sounding. Sandslash is just a Y away from being the same as Sandy Shocks.

The thrashing Braixen is getting is shocking to me, I always thought it was generally popular. Gardevoir and Lopunny have way more infamous reputations and they did fine.

Im surprised by how well Lopunny did actually. This board for the most part is completely allergic to anything remotely furry.

I'm annoyed that we didn't thrash Lopunny but have no problem doing it to Braixen.

There's a handful of results today that I find surprising - I considered giving Golett star too for a 3rd place finish - but Cinccino being one point short of Torterra I didn't expect at all.

Dud of the Day: Deoxys
There's a few good candidates here too (I figured Latias would contend for the division and she didn't even beat Poliwhirl) but Deoxys not even getting positive votes in a weak division, sheesh.

Fun fact: Floette actually had 13 positive votes and 15 negative votes, with five +3s and five -3s! But there were a lot more -2's than +2's
