I've been kind of hyperfixating on this game since I finished it a few days ago. Therefore, even though there's like four topics on this game right now I'm going to do another one.

There will be SPOILERS in this topic, though I'll put the major story stuff from the last chapter in spoiler tags.

I'm going to rank 69 NPC's (not including Vincent and Cid).
I'm going to rank 39 minigame/minigame like activities.
I'm going to rank the ten "main" characters.

Write-ups will range in length, quality, and subject matter.

Hint for #69: This person's death changed everything.

69 . The Other "Other" Shinra Soldier at Nibelheim (aka the boy who drowned, aka the straw that broke the Sephy's back)

Are there theories about this guy yet? Like he survived drowning, lost his memory, and decided to become a professional Queens' Blood player? That Sephiroth only really went off the deep end because he failed to grab this dude in the flashback? That if he had been there he would've put a cold one right between Sephy's eyes before he even stepped one foot outside the Shinra mansion? Because it's all true. I'm calling it now: Remake Part 3 ends with a time travel sequence in which you save this dude, which butterfly effects the whole adventure out of existence. Somehow he saves Corel too.

Anyway, someone had to be #69. Not much to actually say here about the character himself, but I will take the time to acknowledge how awesome the Kalm flashback sequence is. Like most of the game itself, it's as though the devs ripped it out of my imagination. Rebirth is in so many ways more of a faithful remake than Remake was, and these two hours felt like 1997 again. The way that Cloud feels like Cloud doing a Zack impression... just really good writing and directing, seriously.

Hint for 68: Party on, dudes.

68 . Garth, aka Gus's Hype-Man, aka "I really wanted to have 69 characters on the list so people could say 'nice' in the topic"

Perish the thought of my anger at Square Enix impacting my love for Shinra Middle Manager. SE will patch it and all will be forgiven.

As far as NPC's go, Garth is extremely unremarkable with little plot relevancy to speak of. He's second banana/hype man to Gus, who will be make an appearance later in the list. His best scene is Gus's introduction, where some of his dialogue gets ADR'd in.

I want to say he existed in the original FF7 but I can't prove that (and how could anyone?). It would be cool if he was the guy hiding behind the couch that Barret stone cold murders in the original. The fact that this scene isn't in Rebirth is a huge downer by the way.

Garth is kind of involved in the Chocobo racing quest, which is one of the better side stories of Rebirth. But we're scraping the bottom of the barrel here.

Hint for Minigame #39: The worst/most forgettable minigame experience in FF7 Rebirth involves Moogles.

Minigame Ranking #40: Tracking Shai Hulud

Surprise, there are actually 40 minigames because I forgot about one until just now.

First, let me just say that I genuinely like everything in this game (though certainly some of these annoyed the shit out of me). I tend to think "pointlessness" and "unoriginality" are worse qualities to have than annoyance. Therefore, the last place minigame is this random-ass quest from Cosmo Canyon where you have to track a sandworm using an item found in the Moogle Emporium. This wasn't particularly difficult or annoying, but it just seems extremely pointless. Similarly...

Minigame Ranking #39: Tracking a Monster Using a Chocobo or Red XIII

You do this a couple times. The first time I think is kind of interesting, because it shows Red XIII still kind of faking being a bad-ass and boasting to have a strong sniffer, only to be outdone by a chocobo. So that's some nice characterization. Doesn't make the gameplay mechanic any more interesting though!

I think this game does a good job not doing a bunch of stuff that's been done to death by open world games (or it does it better than most at least). However, if I have to follow my nose (i.e. a color scent trail) to find some monsters or corpses or fruit loops or whatever it'll be too soon. It's one of those more recent video game tropes that's just been done to death.

You might say "well shouldn't the vibration detector be higher since it's at least different?" That's a fair point, but it's also just feels completely unnecessary.

Hint for Character #67: Not a fan of Splinter Cell.

Phew. I was actually going to say that tracking the worm should definitely be last. I played for like 88 hours and did most stuff, and that's the only time I legit thought I was wasting my time playing the game.

Monster tracking is fine. Very Witcher-esque. It's fast at least.

I quite liked the monster tracking sequence in the Beneath Still Waters sidequest. It takes you right across the Junon area, which is quite a nice way to return to an area you explored 30 or so hours ago (and breaks up the fast travel spam that's easy to fall into when you return to areas).

Curious how you rank the mini-games!

67 . The Intergrade Crew, aka the Yuffie Squad, aka "Wait, We're Main Characters?"

From left to right, just in case you forgot, it's Zhijie, Nayo, Billy Bob, and Polk. And yes, I'm treating them as one discrete entity because I'll put Garth and random soldier 69 on this list, but I'll be damned if I spend four whole posts talking about these randos.

The Remake series generally does a good job with its original characters, but even in Intergrade these people felt like townspeople that got bumped into the big leagues of main plot relevancy. If I were feeling more generous I'd say maybe its intentional that they feel like nobodies (seeing as they're part of a clandestine eco-terrorist group). "Billy Bob" does not deserve my generosity.

Still, deep and complex characters they ain't. In Rebirth they're coping from the Sector 7 trauma by going on a walkabout in Cosmo Canyon, immersing themselves in planetology. During the Cosmo Canyon protorelic quest, the party will usually arrive at a site, do the terrible gears and gambits game (more on this later on this list than you might think), and have a flashback to the Avalanche splinter cell crew hanging in Seventh Heaven. Everything good about these quests is almost entirely thanks to the flashback stuff. Meanwhile, the Intergrade crew stands around, even remarking about how useless they are. At least they're self aware.

Even though I've kind of trashed them, I was still kind of happy to see them though.

66 . Myrna, aka Mrs. Wallace

She "took Barret's hand" (in marriage). Get it?

To answer the earlier question, according to the Wiki, there was a FF7 novella that described how "Old Man Sakaki" made Barret's gun-arm. I use my privilege as a Westerner to decry any Japanese audience only audio skits, novellas, plays and random commercials as apocryphal. It seems like the devs retconned this into Dr. Sheiran? But also maybe Sheiran only fixed him up and didn't make the prosthetic. I don't remember.

As for Myrna, she feels like a big missed opportunity in Rebirth. In the original game I don't think she ever actually appeared in polygonal form; she was just mentioned casually in conversation. So at least we finally get to see Myrna (for all of 30 seconds). She appears during Barret's trial in the Temple of the Ancients, when the game suddenly transforms into the Last of Us Part II for a few minutes and we get a few close-ups of Barret's bloody stump. I would have liked if the first Corel flashback had been a bit longer and more interactive. Myrna could've had some time to actually be a character, and her reappearance in the Temple may have hit harder.

For example, if she had been in the Corel flashback we could have explored her chronic illness. According to the wiki, Myrna has some kind of chronic illness, which is part of the reason why Barret pushes for the reactor so hard to begin with. This isn't in the game though so again it's apocryphal. We could've also seen more of Marlene as a baby and how she and Eleanor/Dyne interacted. So yeah, a little bit of a missed opportunity imo. Still, in terms of character importance she feels pretty damn important to Barret.

Hint for minigame #38: Cute but pointless and redundant.

Also yeah, Sheiran just helped him medically, iirc he even comments (in surprise) on the gun grafted there. Original game said nothing about who made gun/grafted it.

Shrine of Trials, more like Shrine of Trauma Dumps. I know people comment on Red and Aerith's being the worst but the Barret seeing his wife (and having his hand) for the briefest moment and then taken away when he walks through the doorway really hit hard.

Barret is my favourite so I'm so happy to see someone else think this.

38 . Chocostops

Absolutely, positively, 100% convinced that the devs were originally going to limit fast travel to chocostops, and then some poindexter (wisely) spoke up and said "hey, players should just be able to fast travel everywhere." This was a good gameplay decision, but a bad decision for baby chocobo here, since it made Chocostops a bit of a gameplay redundancy. When you can fast travel anywhere, why do we need to unlock fast travel stops?

In addition to fast travel, chocostops allow us to use cushions (we've gone from sleeping bags, tents, and cottages to cushions). So it does give us a nice animation of Cloud whipping out his hemorrhoid donut to sit on. We also get a lengthy animation of Cloud fixing a sign.

Of course the true star of this "minigame" (and I know I'm construing that term liberally) is the baby chocobo. This little critter is so dang cute. He/she/it bounds out of the wilderness, beckoning us with their cute chirps. They twiddle their feathers in anticipation as we fix the sign. They cheer for us. You can pet them on their head. They take naps with us. They are very cute. They are also a gameplay redundancy and shouldn't exist. Off to the void with you.

Mmmm It's gonna be tough to not put Queen's Blood #1 but yeah, the chocobo racing was done really well.... though I still have an intense hatred for those cactuar doors and constant misjudging the open-closed timing, lol.

But I didnt think of the chocostops as a minigame and we've had one minigame which was part of a quest so I wonder what else I'm forgetting and if something else can compete for the top spot... scouring my minigame memory but probably shouldn't think too hard and just follow with the reveals in this topic!

The Chocobostops are useful in Hard mode becase cushions restore HP/MP. And I found the fast travel points quite useful and preferred using them to resting in towns as it's quicker (I just transmuted 40 cushions at some point).

That said it is pretty clear they were playing around with quite different ideas for how the main world should be traversed until quite late on and their role got downgraded substantially.

Ghost ship is the one that depends on accuracy, right? I also sucked at that but eventually got it, after repeated tries and like just barely, pretty sure I got 18022 if the top score was 18000? I did set the cursor movement speed to minimum and then just trying to do things slowly to be as accurate as possible, getting the patterns and cadence right. Like the level where rows of birds show, it's just strafing right or left across the row while getting your shot timings right. Just focused on accuracy of 100s rather than going out of the way for gold ones.

On the last level, focus on the fat chocobos asap since they explode high value targets which dont instantly disappear, so better to go for the next chocobo that appears than the new targets (think I skipped last chocobo since not enough time/I'm too slow)

Only other thing I caught, at the beginning of level 1 there's a multihit target at the bottom right of the screen, so it's a quick way to get some hits in to help w/ the accuracy score.

65 . Jules

He is risen.

Jules is the first of many returning Remake characters who somehow found their way outside Midgar following the unpleasantness there. In Rebirth, he's hiding out in the "secret gym" between Costa Del Sol and Corel. He's as uplifting and body positive as ever. Once again he gets his ass beat by Tifa in fitness. (We're not here to litigate crunches. The time to discuss crunches will come later).

He knows the value of training and the importance of a good post work out meal. Also, apparently, he's Andrea's literal brother (according to the Wiki). Never pieced that together. The wiki could be wrong.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/c/cb43ccb2.jpg
64 . Seto

He is risen, indeed!

Actually, he's just a literal statue. Where's a gold needle when you need one? If only Seto knew that all he needed to do was cast cure on the Gi, everything would've been fine.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but they kind of botched this scene in Rebirth. If I had to pick a least favorite chapter in the game, it's definitely Cosmo Canyon. The additional stuff with Gi Nattak is super cool, but the actual dungeon and Seto reveal feels rushed to me. In this game, Red XIII just seems kind of stupid for not piecing it together sooner. The Rebirth version lacks subtlety.

Hint for minigame #37: Taking one of these makes it last longer, but why would you want to?

Agree on the Cave of the Gi, it all worked better in original game imo. Weakest chapter for me will still (maybe always) be chapter 13, but of the "regular" chapters and conversions from original, I'm probably with you on Cosmo Canyon.

Re:Jules, the other day I was trying to think which Midgar characters made their way to Rebirth and like, outside lowly sector 5 and 7 people, all of them did? Was genuinely surprised to see so many returners, like I expected Leslie but then you get Kyrie showing up out of left field with absolute banger songs each time, lol. They all had legit reasons for coming back again so made sense from a narrative perspective (Jules' "yearly retreat" probably the weakest tbh)... question remains on 3rd game I guess, like I'm back to only thinking Leslie turns up, lol.

Tifa fangirl still coming on NPC list? The conversation in the other topic made me realize the chicken box minigame hasn't shown yet either, lol

Problem with Cosmo Canyon (though it's still my absolute favorite chapter because Red is the best.) is that in the original the dungeon takes like all of 10 minutes so you barely get any time for Red to even think or speak about what's going on. Whereas with Rebirth it's like a 2 hour dungeon with tons of back and forth dialog.

The whole idea of him not knowing that it was his father that protected everyone doesn't work in an extended format and has those issues like you mentioned. But I forgive it because it's literally impossible to make it work in another way? Unless you make that whole section like 10 minutes long and then it's like, well Red kinda just got fucked in terms of his solo section being nothing.

37 . Taking pictures for Snaps / Taking pictures for quests

I debated making these separate entries but ultimately decided to rank them together since there's not much to say. It's just your standard video game picture taking mechanic. There are two varieties of picture-taking tasks in the game:

A. Finding NPC "Snaps" (sorry bud! you didn't make the list) and taking a picture of a scenic spot.
B. Specific quests where you have to take pictures of things (Costa Del Sol cactuars and constellations).

where A is probably less of a hassle than B, but A is also pointless.

One of the interesting things about the Snaps quests is that you don't actually have to take a screen shot. All you have to do is open camera mode. I actually like this, because if they made you take like an "artistic" shot or whatever that would've been a pain. I also thought that some of the "scenic spots' weren't the best options in the region anyway. So it really truly does end up being a "go here and then come back" quest where there's not even a tangible object to fetch or a person to talk to!

Sometimes on other quests, you'll have to take a picture of something and fiddle with the Zoom so that you get "80%" quality or something. I found this to be hella annoying. First because in the Costa Del Sol Cactuar quest, I somehow missed the premise that you have to photograph the specific cactuar, so I thought the game had bugged on me for a while. However, there is that one cosmo canyon quest where you also sneak a candid pic of Aerith, which is kind of cute. The game is really good at making what should be painfully boring quests tolerable with cute character moments.

63 . Leslie Kyle

Board 8 knows that Leslie Kyle first appeared in the prequel to Advent Children, succinctly titled Final Fantasy VII: The Kids are Alright: A Turks Side Story, where he and Kyrie were detectives. When it comes to these rankings, as I've said already, none of that matters. What we're dealing with here is an extremely small cameo near the end of Rebirth.

In Remake, I thought Leslie was one of the more interesting "new"characters. He's the doorman for Don Corneo's mansion in Remake, where he's searching for his girlfriend, who was a former Corneo "bride." He's very much on his Locke Cole shit: noble treasure hunter trying to save his GF. His search kind of continues in Rebirth; he becomes aware of Solemn Gus offering a young girl as a "prize" in the desert well battle arena. He fights, gets his ass handed to him, then asks us to fight in his stead. Altogether, a pretty forgettable quest, though it does slightly further his character arc.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/e/e9cd6f35.jpg
62 . Tifa's Dad, aka Brian Lockhart

I wonder why some people in Nibelheim dress like cowboys and others dress like "regular" people. I guess Nibelheim is supposed to be like Texas? Except in the North? With mountains? Maybe Tifa, Brian and the Mayor just enjoyed wild west fashion together?

You might think that all Tifa's dad does is die and you aren't wrong. He's also a pretty concerned papa, and for this, I gotta give him credit since he's the only one in Nibelheim who seems remotely worried about the reactor stuff and wary of Shinra soldiers. Maybe he's just overprotective.

One of the interesting aspects of the Tifa/Aerith friendship is thinking about how they both lost their mothers at around the same time. Tifa and Aerith both were raised by widows, one male and the other female. Tifa is tough but also kind of passive, Aerith is outgoing and physically weak but more inwardly strong. I think the parents have a lot to do with this.

Hint for minigame 36: This left me feeling hot and cold.

36 . Chocobo Treasure Hunts / Excavation Intels

Successfully guessed due to perhaps an obvious hint, next up we have Chocobo Hot and Cold. It does seem largely inspired by FFIX's classic minigame. Here's another one where this could have been two separate entries, but I'm going to just stick with ranking them together. I didn't find this as annoying as some games journalists (some people really did NOT like this process), but I also see how it could've been quicker and more rewarding. The excavation intels allow you to transmute new items and are sometimes necessary for other side quest progression, so that's one thing. The random rabbit burrows were rarely worth it, except for filling out your PLAY ARTS set.

Also, surely I'm not the only one who didn't particularly think Chocobo travel was particularly "worth it" (aside from their special abilities). The whole idea of Chocobos is that they're faster and avoid battles. Here, it's unclear that they're actually faster unless you sprint, but most of the time if you're traveling a distance where sprinting is possible, you'll be fast traveling anyway. This is a similar isse that XVI had, where Chocobos weren't a recognizable upgrade over just running around.

Hint for character 61: I expect this guy to be darker, edgier, and more relevant next game. And it's not Vincent.

Being on chocobo was way better. Blows my mind that people would go around without them, unless you want to fight more battles or something I guess.

Chocoback was important for your initial traversal of an area it's not like you can fast travel that

I spent about 45 minutes running around the grasslands (and the desert) searching for excavation areas to get its PLAY ARTS object. It appears to be random which item is in which spot, and it doesn't change when you reset (i.e. you can't just find a spot and save/reload until it gives you what you need), so until someone maps all the spots this will annoy a few people.

That said I quite liked the mechanic in general, at least once I figured out the controls.

And yeah my traversal approach was always run until I unlocked the chocobo, then chocobo everywhere to unlock a gazillion fast travel points (caches and chocostops useful for this purpose if none other), then fast travel. So on hard mode I basically only fast travelled. Driving the buggy off cliffs was fun, but that's all I have that's nice to say about it!

61 . Sonon Kusakabe, aka "Not Yuffie's Brother"

I'm a little surprised at everyone's love of the chocobo. I found it such a hindrance to be constantly getting on and off. I still used them for sure, but oh well.

So long, Sonon! Remember when everyone thought that Sonon was prototypical Cid-gameplay in Intergrade? We were so young and innocent then. Sonon shows up in Yuffie's Temple of the Ancients trial, along with everyone's favorite Dirge or Cerberus villain, Nero. Yuffie's trial heavily implies that this dude is still alive after being stabbed multiple times in the back by purple goo knives. Odds are he returns in the Wutai section of Final Fantasy VII Reunite, and I bet he's going to be dirged out. Zippers galore, bandages, capes and cowls, the whole shebang.

60 . Esther

So maybe I'm completely misremembering or just telling lies outside of school, but I swear that Esther in the original game was a robot. And not like a Chadley humanoid either, but an honest to goodness Rosie from the Jetsons type deal. Apparently not though, because I can't find any mention of her being an android.

Human or robot or cyborg, Rebirth spends surprisingly little time with Esther. Like, she has less screentime here than she does in the original, pretty much. In the original, she was the NPC to talk to about chocobo racing. In this game, she's here to get you out of the prison and that's about it. I kind of thought she'd be revealed as Sam's daughter or Chobo Billy's long-last half sister or something. Nope!

Hint for minigame 35: It's getting harder and harder to think of segues for these

35 . Wheelie Master, or "I wheelie, wheelie, wheelie wheelie wheelie like you"

Where my CRJ fans at?

If you watched any of the Rebirth trailer reaction videos, very few images got as much of a universal WHAT from youtubers as the sight of Cloud Strife on a segway. This shit was everywhere.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/2/27d8e64d.jpg

I stole that from someone on this board probably.

So we were all hyped as hell to see Cloud on a segway, Tifa on a segway, Aerith on a segway, Red XIII on a segway, etc. Well we didn't get Red on a segway (though we did get Red on chocoback, for which I am thankful). We also didn't necessarily get a fun minigame out of it either. If you just ride around Costa Del Sol your first time visiting you'll probably easily rack up the points necessary to be dubbed a wheelie master. So it's one of the easier quests. Visually striking and funny for a second, but not a lot of depth there.

Hint for Character 59: I came here to play cards and murder guys in robes, and I'm all out of cards

I think the Wheelie is the best integration I've yet come across for the DualSense's shoulder buttons(I forgot what they're called.) Like something about it just feels so good and realistic?

??? I've found they have by far the best loot in the game minus the purple chests that have equipment in them. Like I'll open 3 chests, find a bunch of junk, and then do a rabbit burrow and get 5 of the rarest material from that one hole.

59 . Captain Titov

A rebirth OC as far as I'm aware, this guy is the Captain of the Shinra 8. In the OG, this was pretty much a military vessel, but in Rebirth it's a pleasure cruise baby! If your idea of pleasure is engaging in a Queen's Blood tournament with your besties.

Titov seems to have very little relevancy to the game at large. His shining moment is he almost headshots Yuffie when she's disguised as a robed figure. She reveals herself and he then proceeds to kill a bunch of the robes for the safety of his passengers. What an honorable soul.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/9/9e7f8abf.jpg
58 . Madame M

Let me get them digits, if you know what I'm sayin. She's a hand masseuse. Okay? THAT'S IT. They certainly don't mean anything else by this.

Another person we meet for the first time in Rebirth on the boat, Madame M has seemingly traded in her rub down business for bigger and brighter things. Or the promise of them at least. It does kind of make sense that people would flee Wall Market in droves after the Corneo stuff and Sector 7 stuff so yeah, I totally don't mind seeing these folks again. They could've done a bit more with Madame M though. You can play her in Queen's Blood? Except I chose Andrea instead. Sorry Madame.

What else... she scolds you for not paying attention to your date. But I'm telling you there's a not insignificant percentage of players who might have preferred to go on the saucer date with her.
