I haven't even watched season 2! When I was gonna watch it that stuff about about how much they fucked over the VAs and it made me feel icky.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has varied a bit in terms of story arc quality, but this season seems to be starting off pretty good imo.

This seasons big budget marketing anime has finally aired, Kaiju No 8. No surprise here that I think it's much more deserving of it than Solo Leveling was, lol. Considering how inescapable it's been both on the Crunchy app itself and other social media ads for weeks, I figure they're putting a lot of eggs in this basket. They even did a live simulsub airing alongside the Japanese TV broadcast.

And, frankly, it's better than I expected! I already figured it would be great because the original series is good and Production IG is one of the best on their A-game, but even still. I'm extremely pleased with how willing they are to be loose with the animation and character models, much of the music is meant to be modern mixed giving off the feel of old Godzilla soundtracks, and they've actually done a lot of great post processing work to provide a lot of good lighting im this episode, stuff like the sun shining through trees or passing over characters running through a rubble filled hallway. Kafka himself is also just a really fun protagonist, and not just because he's older than the average SJ lead.

I've said before that this is going to have major appeal to the MHA crowd and I think that remains true, especially as the series continues to get longer in the tooth. MHA itself is airing this season at some point, will be interested in seeing how those numbers compare (I really do not see the MHA anime getting discussed much at all any more, even while the last season was airing, compared to the manga itself).

Jellyfish episode 2 was a joy, it may even overtake Girls Band Cry for my #1 new show spot. It's clear now with episode 2 how much this series is wearing it's A Place Further Than the Universe influence on it's sleeve.

Whisper Me a Love Song was a fantastic surprise. As someone who stopped reading the manga, this was one of my least anticipated shows that was still on the watch list, but I think this is going to be a much better experience than the source material. The color use here is very strong, and both it and the general design of the anime help a lot with the, for lack of a better term, generic look of the manga. This was a big problem for me later on in the series when I couldn't even tell some characters apart in some scenes. Unsurprisingly, for a show about a singer in a band (this is just all over this season, huh?), being able to hear the songs and the bands play is a big deal. Certainly reminded me why I started reading the series in the first place, and I'm really happy to get this second shot at it. They also go out of their way to lay some groundwork for future character revelations that weren't really setup as clearly in the manga, which is nice (wanted to go back and check this first).

If I had one thing to complain about, this is one of the biggest disparities I've ever seen between character art and background extra character quality in any anime. It's only a couple seconds across the episode runtime, but these models are abysmal. Even in the OP they're awful, like did these get put in at the last second or what??

......................It's a long list. There's only like 3 that I think have the potential to be cut, and I don't plan to at the moment. Oof.

I've had the inkling in the back of my head that "on this one has the potential to be the best one this season, too" on 6 occasions already, and that's excluding sequels.

Who knew that a drama show where a bunch of random Yokai and humans have a town barbecue, getting into an childhood crush, and shop at Home Depot could be this engaging.

The real key here is that if this was an identical show without the Yokai gimmick at all it would still be good, with very little tweaking.

More first episode impressions!

-Kaiju No. 8 was okay. Awesome production values, plus I'm a kaiju fan so the setting is cool. The worldbuilding aspect of workers coming in after to clean up the corpses is neat, and I'm kinda sad that won't be the focus of the show. As for the main dude and what the show will actually be about, this first episode wasn't enough to sell me on that yet. I mean he only just transformed at the very end, I feel like this could still go a bunch of different ways. I'll have to watch a few more to give it a fair ranking.

-Whisper Me a Love Song was good too! I have a bad track record with yuri anime. Usually I'm hopeful at the start but then they descend into shitty melodrama (I'm in Love with the Villainess, Citrus) or simply never go anywhere (Adachi and Shimamura). Still, I'm going to keep giving them a try until I find the one for me! The two leads in this are good characters and cute together so far. I'm taking the risk of getting my hopes up again.

Anyway, this is everything I'm going to follow (for now). I'm fully caught up on everything except episode two of Highspeed Etoile, I couldn't bring myself to watch it yet. I'll probably write more about each of the shows a bit further into the season when the ranking has solidified, but this is it for now.

No, you're the boss. It's the show's job to prove itself to you. You're firing the show.

I'm probably going to drop Astro Note, even though the show is good and isn't doing anything wrong, because I just don't care that much about it compared to other shows. That may happen with Salad Bowl, too. Doesn't mean I thought those shows were bad at all!

I dropped 13 of the 16 shows I started watching last season. I'll come back to a few of them eventually. Most I'm just gonna read the manga!

I used to have a rule that I needed to watch three episodes before dropping something no matter how awful it was, but I stopped doing that last year. Yuri is my Job was one I dropped after one episode because I knew it 100% wasn't for me. I also tried watching The Eccentric Family, an older PA Works anime, but I got such bad vibes from it that I dropped it after one episode too. Like, these people ate the main tanuki guy's father and he didn't seem to care and was also very blas about them wanting to kill and eat him too. I nope'd right out of that one because I felt like it would just make me angry. Hated the main girl. I was proud of myself for stopping that show after one episode.

I doubt I'll ever be the type to drop a lot of anime, though. If anything, I might go back and actually finish a few I have dropped. Urahara, Beatless, and Psycho Pass deserve another chance. When I drop a show, I want it to be special. I want it to mean something! If I can slog through trash like Highspeed Etoile, that means dropped shows like Gantz are on a whole other level of bad.

I struggle to think of an anime that made me laugh harder than during the finale of Eccentric Family's first season. A comedy of errors of epic proportions.

I still haven't watched S2, didn't really hear much about it.

I enjoyed that S7E1 of MHA used the 1st opening again granted it was essentially a full series recap

Went ahead and caught up on the full Ranger Reject/Loser Ranger manga.

It's a bit messy with too many spinning plates, but I'll be damned if it's not some of the most fun I've had reading a Shounen manga in a while.

And as the main plot continues to go more off the rails, the individual arcs just keep getting better.

I actually finally made more progress in LotGH over the weekend! I watched the second movie and the next two episodes, (bringing me to episode 4 overall). Not to get too political, but the Alliance should become a dictatorship and put Yang in charge because no one else over there knows what theyre doing.

Also with recent events renewing the worry that B8 or Gamefaqs might randomly disappear one day, I hope that most of the people here can regroup somewhere! The B8 discord has an anime channel I usually only check during SMFAS season, but I guess that's where I'd go, at least at first. What would even be the point of watching anime if I couldn't talk about it afterwards.

Every episode is better than the last, it's a joy to watch. Everything I've ever heard through osmosis about how good Holo is has been absolutely true.
