In terms of the original series, the creator of said that they exist in separate universes.

https://web.archive.org/web/20160913170811/http://nerdist.com/darkwing-duck-is-an-alternate-reality-not-a-ducktales-spinoff/

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Stones explained that Darkwing Duck took place in its own separate universe. Because Launchpad appeared in DuckTales and we used [Gizmoduck] as the Superman character, the hero who gets all the glory as opposed to Darkwing, fans try to connect the two realities. They are two different universes in my book. We work in the alternate Duckiverse. Stones went on to cite the small differences in Launchpads depiction as proof of the different realities. For example, Darkwing Ducks Launchpad was a relatively competent pilot and sidekick, while his counterpart in DuckTales crashed planes more often than he landed them.

Boom Studios had the license to produce Disney comics for a while, and they made both Ducktales and Darkwing Duck at the same time.
These were set after the cartoons, and they had a shared universe because they wanted that. One of the jokes was that Scrooge and Darkwing signed a contract about Launchpaf custody.

Launchpad has a pretty good line about this in Ducktales 2017 iirc: "I can spend my days in Duckburg, my nights in St. Canard, and I can sleep on the drive over!" (implied joke being that he's the one driving)

I always assumed Darkwing, DuckTales and Talespin were all in the same universe BECAUSE of Launchpad.

DuckTales 2017 threw a wrench in that theory by repeatedly emphasizing that only DW himself actually belonged in universe, but I loved the way the did the origin story so damn much that I didn't care.

Like straight-up, that was one of the best written episodes of anything that I have ever seen.

Half the reason I ended up liking the Sonic movies (the other half obviously being Jim Carrey hamming it up) was that Ben Schwartz basically played Sonic the same way he played Dewey Duck: as a likeable, somewhat-insecure and eager-to-prove-himself kid constantly in over his head, as opposed to the too-cool-for-school giant ball of attitude that I always assumed game-Sonic was.

Both are Disney-owned ducks.

According to Don Rosa's Duck Family Tree, Scrooge's paternal grandmother was named Molly Mallard, so many have a headcanon that Drake Mallard is a distant relative to Donald.

Got it, thought people were suggesting there was a real connection with Donald in Darkwing Duck (as if he appeared), but I suppose they're saying Donald is super popular, so Darkwing Duck is also super popular by loose extension.

What I think he really meant was that Donald Duck is extremely popular in the Netherlands, and they have a weekly Donald Duck magazine that has been running for over 50 years.
In Sweden, we have a weekly Donald Duck magazine that has been running for 75 years, and even if it is a Donald Duck magazine, it is not exclusive to stories that involves him. It got stories with Scrooge, Mickey Mouse, and both Ducktales and Darkwing Duck when they were running on the telly. I assume that it is the same with the Dutch magazine.
And some episodes of the rebooted Ducktales show got inspired by some of the comics that had been featured in the Donald Duck magazine. Or was close enough, having a weekly magazine for 50 years means that you have had tons of stories and you will always be able to find something close enough. Like the Simpsons.

Talespin was never going to star Launchpad. The confusion comes from an aspect of the show that WAS taken from DuckTales. You see, when Launchpad McQuack was originally introduced, he was going to have his own cargo plane business and he would end up helping Scrooge and the gang on the side of his main business (and, presumably, his business could lead to plots, as well).
They scrapped the idea, and turned him into Scrooges private pilot.
The concept was reused when they created Talespin.

There was indeed supposed to be a Darkwing reboot, based on the character's introduction / reboot in Ducktales 2017. I thought I heard Seth Rogen was attached to it in some capacity. I haven't personally heard any news about it lately though.

I'm angry that we didn't get a full Darkwing Duck series as a spin-off of Ducktales 2017, or at least more episodes about him. They set up Negaduck in a stinger, but the show ended before they got to use him. Honestly the only part of the series that felt incomplete.
