The problem with this is, that you can guarantee that the only reason that this bill was put into effect is to stop LGBT kids from getting any sort of support.

Bing bong. This isn't "protect the children" this is "protect the children from actually learning things we hate are actually normal and not Satanic."

Reminder, in 2022 DeSantis signed a 16 week ban on abortion. Then after his reelection, in 2023 he signed the strictest abortion ban in the country.

This is only a test run.

No, I don't agree with this.

Adding one arbitrary year to when kids can sign up for that isn't going to help anything. Assuming that people even followed these logs and didn't just lie about their birthdays.

Social media is a major and systemic issue that need to be properly dealt with on every avenue, just like most issues in this country from opioid addiction to gun problems.

Yes, in the overarching concept. Social media is beyond devastatingfor adults. It is straight up destroying kids/teens ability to function as normal humans. Restricting its use should be a societal priority.

No, in why it was implemented.

With Desantis it's a slippery slope though.

Like with his bill that banned schools from teaching about sexual orientation and sexual identity. It started with little kids because that got less pushback, then it expanded all the way through high school aged students.

I wouldn't be surprised if slowly, the social media ban expanded to include everyone under 18.

Social media is dangerous for children and teens for many reasons. Information harvesting, mental health concerns, addiction, etc. are all serious risks to their safety and wellbeing.

Parents don't do enough to supervise and educate their kids about internet usage, which leads to a lot of negative outcomes.

However, I don't think a ban or restriction altogether is going to solve the issue. Why are we going after the kids when we should be going after the platforms that allow things like this to occur?

Especially the parts about personal info. No 13 year old needs to be tracked by brand metadata so they can be more effectively manipulated by marketing bullshit.

Social media is largely a mistake and with new laws coming the pipe nationally, it isnt a bad idea to protect kids. Let their parents help them navigate the net until then. They can use the net, they just cant destroy their future via social media which seems not bad.

Then maybe, just a thought, but parents should actually curate and monitor their children's access instead of pointless, widespread, unenforceable laws that everybody knows isn't actually about protecting the children.

Much like every other "protect the children" law Florida has passed.

If there were parents who gave their kids highly addictive drugs that would have long term detrimental impacts on their social and mental development, we'd arrest the parents for child abuse.

That is completely ridiculous hyperbole. Age-restricted entertainment is a more accurate comparison. Social media isn't completely illegal and a biological harm. Even legal drugs like weed/alcohol has it legal to "provide a reasonable amount of alcohol at reasonable times" in most states.

And more: who draws that line? People in the medical field or politicians? Because "long term detrimental impacts on their social and mental development" has been used to ban gender affirming care for trans youth. And entirely in Florida.

Yeah, people are mostly basing this off of articles that tell of the nebulous psychological problems social media can have by negative correlations with recent trends, something which exists for near everything, but then also ignore the positive correlations that have been linked to social media. It's silly seeing people fall into the same mentality their parents did.
