I love it. It has this old school sincere vibe, like the Lord of the rings. No one is winking at the camera, no stupid marvel cinematic universe levity. Just everyone acting like this is really happening. I miss that.

Cause him living in the samurai village and their last stand was a great representation of the society and bushido.
or at least great for entertainment.

He was the ignorant white westerner rehabilitated by those he was meant to suppress and ultimately saw more honor in their ways than of his own people.

Still ridiculous for a white American to be the "last samurai", always think about the Chappelle show Paul Moody skit.

I don't know how its a shit movie and offensive. The movie's title itself is only a misunderstanding because it was about Samurai as in plural and takes place during a point in time that is actually historically accurate with foreigners coming to the land.

What's the plural of Samurai? Samurai. The movie isn't calling him a Samurai, its him meeting with the last of the samurai and understanding them. People get this completely wrong all the time.

Fair point, however you can definitely see why people see it that way when he is like literally the sole survivor and part of the plot was that the samurai community had accepted him as one of their own, meaning that of that village he was the last samurai as the rest were women and children.

Yes but that doesn't necessarily make it terrible. People only misunderstood because he was the star of the movie and on the cover. People look at it like its a white savior movie but it was deeper than that and the title itself wasn't meant to call him a samurai or even the last one.

It reminds me of Starship Troopers and how everyone hated it because they never realized it was satire at the time.

The whole notion of how samurai are portrayed is pretty stupid.

Like these noble warrior monks who die by honour and the sword. That is the fiction.

Its definitely the most obvious white savior trope ive ever seen.

The movie is based on a time where the samurai were disappearing. Wearing a sword became illegal and there had been so much infighting. They were the last and there had been westerners who ventured into Japan to fight on both sides and this just depicts a man with a narrow view and learning that he was wrong.

I feel that its the perfect symbolism for racism and how narrow and ignorant racists are.

There were lots of dudes with swords and guns and they killed each other

10/10 great movie, I'm not sure what else you wanted.

in fairness, its a fiction based on events that actually happened. Not that everything in that movie was correct but they did try for a realistic take on Japanese history in that era.

Can't help but notice that that doesn't answer the question that was asked to you.

It gets unwarranted hate for being one of the many "we need a white guy for western audiences to care" movies. The thing is that it's still really good.

Normally I'd agree but I think this wouldn't fall into that category since the movie isn't whitewashing a character nor is it making the impossible possible. As another user pointed out, this is real events.(I'm not arguing with you but I'm pretty much just echoing your point)

There will still be those who are offended and a lot of people most likely never saw the movie and only the box. Maybe plastering Tom Cruise's face on it was too detrimental. Or it could have been called something else as to not be misunderstood.

Ken Watanabe is awesome! So is Hiroyuki Sanada.

Even when I saw it back then in my teens, I thought the part where they send the ninja group to attack was unintentionally hilarious. It makes zero historical sense, and feels like one of the products was like "If it's Japanese, it needs ninjas!"

It's still a good movie though.
