ALDINE, Texas A one-year-old girl is now dead after reportedly being hit by an Uber driver who ran her over while dropping her and her family members off.
The accident happened around 12:40 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of an apartment complex along Waverly Drive in Aldine.

The Harris County Sheriffs Office says the Uber driver dropped off the passengers, including three adults and a one-year-old girl.

As the adults walked towards the apartment complex and out of the vehicles pathway, the toddler was walking in front of the gray Volkswagen SUV.

When the Uber driver saw the female adult clear at a couple of feet, he began driving forward to turn around, accidentally rolling over the child, said Lt. K Benoit of the Harris County Sheriffs Office.

The family tried rescuing the girl and driving her to the hospital. They flagged down an emergency vehicle nearby, which then took the girl to the hospital where she later died.

In the moments after the child was run over, family members opened the SUVs doors and assaulted the driver.

Hes in serious condition. You know, non-life threatening, but serious, Benoit said.

Hearing the commotion outside, neighbors started walking out on their porches to see what was happening. This includes Simya Washington, whose security camera captured the entire incident unfold.

I just heard a lot of commotion outside, and I just came outside, and I just seen, like, blood and a baby laying on the ground, Washington said. It was just so traumatic, because I was just thinking about my baby, you know, my son or anybody else kids it was just so, I couldnt do, I couldnt even.

The driver is being treated for his injuries.

Meanwhile, the Harris County Sheriffs Office has not filed any charges against either the driver or those who assaulted him.

At this time, no charges have been filed, Benoit said. But however, it is still under investigation. There could be charges a couple of different ways.

The driver has been identified as Muhammad Khan. The identity of the girl has not yet been released.

Speaking as an Uber driver for nine years, always always make sure you can see every passenger clearly away from your vehicle before you leave. Small children are incredibly unpredictable.

I don't think they were watching their kid though. They just left that kid behind.

What the hell kind of reaction is that? "He accidentally ran over our kid, so let's beat him to within an inch of his life?" What?

That's what I'm saying. Then they want to beat up the driver.

Family that brutally assaulted the driver should go to jail.

Yeah, it's tragic he ran over their baby, but it was an accident. Doesn't give them the right to beat him nearly to death.
The fact they both weren't watching the baby and their first instinct wasn't to try and get help but to assault the driver says a lot.

I don't think anyone is blameless here. But after watching the video, there is 1 female adult, 1 teenager, and 1 smaller child, not 3 adults. But damn at the way they all just walked off leaving the 1 year old behind. I place more blame on the adult. Look how far she walked away without paying attention to the 1 year old. https://twitter.com/GageGoulding/status/1769534294031003780/photo/1

I dont understand why you wouldnt be holding the 1 year olds hand as you exit a vehicle in the middle of the street. A child that young has probably only been walking for a few months and you just leave her behind?

Exactly. She wasn't even watching the kid. What the hell did she think would happen leaving the kid alone.

I don't think this is the drivers fault at all, small child like that would be difficult to see and the adults absolutely should have been holding that childs hand and making sure she was with them as they walked off.

Quick clarification, the parents did NOT beat up the driver, the video report says. It was non-parents who did the beating.

But anyway. I use uber a lot, and my friend is always slow getting into the car compared to me. I can't tell you the number of times the uber driver will just start driving off with my friend's door still open. I mean it blows my fucking mind. I'm surprised she hasn't been injured yet. It's just bizarre. Why are uber drivers so unobservant?

Also just another side note, but uber drivers are consistently horrible drivers in my experience. Always missing turns, driving weird, etc. I guess this story just brought out my uber hate is all.

Edit: oh and yes the guardian is also very at fault here for totally leaving that baby behind in a street where cars drive.

Uber drivers are terrible because they hire anybody off the street and they have no standards.

so as a result, a majority of them are a bottom of the barrel employees because anyone with options would not do it full-time

most decent drivers only do the job part time on the side

You can also be an Uber driver without a valid license. I know many that just used their friends ID and started driving. The app doesn't care about vetting. Just a pulse and go.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I say the blame goes to the family. It's not like the driver immediately pulled off. He probably reasonably assumed the 1 year old was with them. Because why wouldn't the child be with the family? They did walk pretty far away, and the child was definitely not visible from his seat. I mean I get on one hand, he could have and probably should made sure he knew exactly how many passengers there were and that he laid eyes on every single one, especially a toddler, so I'll say maybe a little blame goes there. But also, I think it's pretty reasonable to expect a family would not leave their 1 year old for several seconds in a friggin' parking lot. My daughter is 3 years old, and I STILL hold her hand in parking lots instead of letting her run freely.

Reminder that once the huge pickup truck/SUV boom in America started, reported instances of kids getting run over in their own driveways skyrocketed.

But they're totally safer you guys! That justifies the piss poor fuel efficiency!
