HB119 which was passed during the last week of the recent legislative session creates the Educator-Protector Program where teachers who undergo annual firearm training can securely carry guns at school to respond to an intruder or active shooter. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Tim Jimenez, R-Tooele, also provides legal liability protection to teachers who participate in the annual training in the event they accidentally harm a student or other staff member as long as they act without "gross negligence," Jimenez said.

The more likely scenario is a student accidentally hurting themself or someone else with a teacher's unsecured gun, or a teacher shooting another teacher or the wrong student in the case of a school shooting. But both of those scenarios are acceptable to Republicans if it means they don't have to buck the NRA.

I'd say it's more about attacking faith in public education, with the hopes that more families will opt for homeschooling / private schools - and eventually charter schools if public education in its current form collapses

Turns out it's too difficult to just straight dismantle public education given the widespread support it receives (despite Marge's efforts last year to pass a bill to dismantle the DoE), so these side channel attacks like this and making teachers' lives living hells in states like Florida are the next best bet

I think you're thinking of the Walmart incident.

There was that target one where the cops shot at someone and killed the teenage girl in the changing room. But no, I swear there was a teacher in one of these shit hole states that allow this shit, where the teacher's gun misfired and ended up flying through the room into another room. Don't think anyone was injured, but like wtf.

Seems like I was conflating some stories. There's one where a first grade teacher's gun went off, another where it went off and ricocheted into a kids neck, then another where it went off in a bathroom into another room.

In short, stop allowing guns in schools. Also all the teachers, resource officers, and parents accidentally shooting themselves is just ridiculous. jfc people.

I'm a teacher in Utah and this worries me ( -_-) Unfortunately, it's not new either. Teachers have been able to carry here for over ten years.
