There's definitely a lot of effort put into this game, it has its charm and even dumb jokes that I can't help but laugh at. The masks idea was cool for the most part.

Some of the controls are wonky, not just for Crash but the other characters you get to play as. I can't even imagine going for 100% with Cortex, that must be miserable.

Yeah the levels are so damn long, even for just reaching the end of the level, never mind 100%ing it. I can't even imagine playing the game the traditional way with limited lives. On the last level I died literally 100 times. That part where you have to not get hit by lasers and they keep switching each mask that you use... goddamn. Just goddamn. I still don't know how to do it, I just sacrifice an aku aku mask to go through

the game that killed the franchise right in the middle of it's redemption arc, it had a lot of problems yet because of a certain someone's design all the failure is blamed squarely on her and the woke. It's Krystal all over again.

this isn't true at all, get a grip already

however i kind of agree with the rest, and then crash team rumble executed the series at point-blank

Hated this game, and I'm a huge crash fan

all the bugs, glitches, and the level design turned me off so fast, awful game imo

one of my biggest complaints that i stand by is that too few of the levels and worlds felt "Crash"

the island goes by very quickly, the pirate world is alright, the snow world is alright, and the latter swamp-half of the new orleans world is alright. i think i remember a mine or some kind of sewer, or plant, that was cool too. and the other playable characters were just really janky, especially cortex

Okay what exactly happened there and when was this? I was following the series relatively closely during that Crash trilogy/spyro trilogy remake era where it seemed like they were remastering all our classic games and done pretty well too.

You know what I actually loved the Cortex castle aesthetic (I love castles in general) but the last bit of platforming ranged from tedious to annoyingly difficult.

Not sure what you mean though. When I first played I did feel like the "order" of levels was messed up, like they did away with the traditional 90s design of forest first, then desert, then fire, then ice land, etc etc

I finally tried a couple of inverted levels and... thanks, I hate it.

The psychedelic colors and creepy design would have been cool and it almost reminded me of Psychonauts, a game I love, however the inverted level itself is just horrible to platform through. It's incredibly dark and you can barely see anything and expected to have fun playing it?

Interested to know who these people are who did do everything, they must be like robot talented.

As someone who did in fact 100% it, I do not wish that fate upon anyone, and yes Cortex levels were the worst part. Well, not including all the animal riding levels which were straight up horrible when it came to getting the perfect relics. It's one thing to not die on pure platforming levels, but it really feels awful to essentially perfect like 80% of a level only to have to restart (and sit through long loading screen which probably added literal hours to my total playtime) because of shitty slippery animal controls at the very end...

Did you really? That's crazy. A friend of mine almost cried and straight up gave up when attempting to complete it.

I haven't even bothered getting the tapes except a few I was able to get through normal play. Their condition is you have to get through a level without dying once, and then you can collect the tape. Yeah no I'm not gonna do that.

Damn, reading old posts about the game and the amount of vitriol people had for it... just don't do 100%, it's not like the game kidnapped your family and forced you to do it. What's with some gamers' compulsive need to do everything. The hate is completely justified but at the same time it's like, don't do it.

I definitely got frustrated at times, but honestly I was thankful for the infinity lives mechanic the game had and that they maintained the aku aku mask tradition. It helps for us who just want to beat the game.

the problem with "just don't do it" means you miss out on like... 70% of the game's content and replayability. people should go off and mald as the kids say so maybe next time the devs will try something that isn't tedious and almost spiteful to the player at times

not that the series isn't face down in the ditch now anyway

This

the best way i can compare it, and it may be bad but whatever, is that if you buy a whole pizza for yourself

after the first 3 slices you're full, well what if you want more later? so you get another slice, and its atrociously bad

some people would say "well dont eat the rest", but you paid for it, you want to enjoy the whole thing, its your money

Yeah it's a shame the game didn't receive well, because it clearly a love letter to the classic Crash games. The problem is it goes way too far in that direction, hiding things in frustrating parts and every level being like 4 times as long as any of the PS1 ones. Not to mention the levels themselves just being more difficult.

The levels being so long makes doing stuff like making it through the level without dying or never missing a box so much more annoying, when in the PS1 games those were fun targets to go after because they were generally harder, but not much harder than just playing through the level, which made going after the extra rewards more encouraging (the exception to this are the 2nd/3rd time trial rewards, but the first time trials weren't too hard).

Its just being too over-indulgent into what people love about Crash, that it sort of goes too deep and ends up missing the mark.

Also a shame, because it means we'll also probably never get a similar game with Spyro.

Good point. What do you think about "punishing" the devs by forcing them to complete their own game? I don't know how extensive their playtesting is but it feels doubtful they could actually complete their own game.

Agreed, and that last bit in particular is what's sad because we definitely won't get another Spyro game. I played the remake trilogy and overall they were not bad, I'd say I enjoyed them.

But actually I would much rather have Sly 5, which is the real shame because it's a fun platformer and yet seems to be the most forgotten out of the Sony platformer properties despite having my favorite aesthetic and feel (heists, saturday morning cartoon style adventures, cel-shaded graphics, it checks all boxes)
