Dwayne Johnson now officially owns title to the sobriquet The most electrifying man in sports and entertainment.

As announced last month, Johnson has the rights to his famous ring name, The Rock. In its 10-K filing Feb. 27 with the SEC, TKO revealed two dozen additional names and taglines previously the property of WWE that are now in Johnsons control.

Heres the full list: The Rock, Rocky Maivia, Team Corporate, Rock Nation, The Nation, Roody Poo, Candy Ass, Jabroni, If you smell what The Rock is cooking, The Samoan Sensation, The Blue Chipper, The Brahma Bull, The Peoples Champion, The Great One, Know Your Role and Shut Your Mouth, Team Bring It, The Rock Just Bring It, The Peoples Elbow, Rock Bottom, Finally, The Rock has come back to, It doesnt matter what, Blue Hell, The millions (and millions), Rockpocalypse, Project Rock and The most electrifying man in sports and entertainment.
Under the TKO agreement, Johnson also has obtained ownership of related logos and service marks as well as all other nicknames, caricatures, voice, signature, gestures, routines, costumes or parts of costumes, accessories [and] crowns related to his time as a WWE performer.
The agreement adds, For the avoidance of doubt, the Rock IP does not include any photographic, audio and/or audiovisual footage of Dwayne Johnson embodied in the copyrighted works of WWE, nor does the Rock IP include any photographs, audio and/or audiovisual footage of Dwayne Johnson created by WWE in connection Dwayne Johnsons services under the terms of the Services Agreement.
Per the SEC filing for Johnsons appointment to the TKO board, Johnson received $30 million in TKO stock that vests in installments through the end of 2025, for a promotional services contract. In addition, Johnson received $491,000 in royalty payments from WWE in 2023 and he will continue to receive such annual royalties from WWE and will be entitled to receive royalties in connection with the sale of licensed products that utilize the Assigned IP and his name, likeness and other intellectual property rights in accordance with the Services Agreement, per the filing.

Sounds like WWE itself already owned those as they often do with their wrestlers and Rock just got control of it himself.

He's on the board of directors who owns stake of TKO, which owns WWE and UFC so it must've been pretty easy to do.

Before this the WWE itself owned "The Rock" and all that listed, he didn't really have control over it.

The WWE is weird how it is so insidious that you couldn't stream if you used your WWE name. That's so archaic. But I guess New Day had already negotiated that?

He won't be sued because these were trademarks WWE has already had for many years. He didn't trademark anything, he just gained ownership of the trademarks WWE already had.

His entire character has been property of WWE, they could've told him not to do it or reference it at all and he'd have to comply. Now he owns it and can do whatever he wants with it.

I haven't read it all but he could theoretically show up on AEW tv as "The Rock" in full gimmick *because* it's his now. I assume, I could be wrong.

Thats not how IP rights work. They didnt trademark the phrase, they trademarked it specifically as a noun/name, presumably to keep other wrestlers from calling their move the Rock Bottom and capitalizing off the name, or even possibly trademarking it themselves. If it can be trademarked, somebody inevitably will.

At the end of the day, WWE trademarks all this shit so that they own the wrestlers identities. Its why they pretty much never let anybody wrestle under their real name or a name they own the rights to.

All this is is Rock finally getting to own the stuff he made famous in WWE instead of WWE still owning it all. It was already trademarked long ago.

This. This is the point. We know this to be true, because it's clear WWE wasn't randomly collecting money every time somebody said "blue chipper" or "rock bottom" in media, for example.

Decrying The Rock here is to argue corporations should be able to own characters that individual people create, instead of the people who actually create them.

It's honestly just so weird how people are willing to shut their brains off just to hate The Rock, for some reason. Like how people got mad he "only" donated literally the biggest single donation ever to SAG-AFTRA, during the strike, instead of somehow literally just... Paying all of their wages ever, forever.

The Rock did not trademark these things. WWE trademarked these things damn near 30 years ago. The Rock finally just got ownership of his own creations, away from a larger corporation. And he's clearly not going to pursue them against normal people, just within the world of wrestling.
