These games aren't exactly similar but they shared some powerful traits:

  • incredibly immersive
  • journal-based exploration. No map markers, no flahing waypoint to follow. Just reading stuff and putting together clues and figuring stuff out
  • Actually a lil scary, but also with a suitably nice "safe" feeling you get from being back at base after a scary expedition

I tried subnautica sub zero and somehow it just didn't stick. Maybe I'll give it another go. But other suggestions welcome.

I've heard people make some comparisons between Pacific Drive (PS5 game that just came out) and The Outer Wilds

The Outer Wilds is very good. Don't mistake it with the fallout-like The Outer Worlds because they are nothing alike

I can safely say it's in the top 3 most memorable game I've played this decade

I don't know anything about this game, but I've seen people more than once suggest Tunic.

Hollow Knight too, but that's more Souls-like in exploring its story than Outer Wilds/Subnautica.

I'm assuming you did play Echo of the Eye, right?

Give Subnautica Below Zero another chance. I was skeptical at first too and didn't like how it felt different. Looking back now though, I'm glad it wasn't trying to captivate an identical experience to the first, but went for being its own thing instead. The map is different enough to be interesting, and the story is pretty engaging too.

Below Zero is a lot better if you go into it with the mindset of it being DLC rather than a full sequel
