When I was around 16. My mom kept (very intentionally) pronouncing my next door neighbor's name wrong, and even asked me in a hushed tone if they're legal.

All the little things started becoming more apparent. And it's only gotten worse with their age.

My parents were decidedly not racist.

But I learned something about racial tensions in town that I did not know, just last week.
My Mom befriended an African American in grade school. But they had to keep their, familiarity under wraps.

I always knew who my parents were, but I didn't realize that it was just still that bad in the early 60's.

Long story short, I connected to someone who knew her in grade school, and he opened up to me about how it was, and how she was.

My, Mom was OG Civil Rights Movement.

I thought about making a topic about what I was sent, because, It's really is kinda wholesome.

Thank you. I know this is wall of textie, but this was I was sent, so I will post it.
I took out the names, that's all.

I Get It. Its a Really Sensitive subject, you dont know me, I dont know you and its like opening an old wound. These things are Very Difficult to get over! I lost My brother in an auto accident in 1970, hed just turned 17. I Still Cry over him! And Ive shed Many tears over your mom. I was in love w/ her. We became secret friends. Back then was pretty racist, yes, even in Saratoga! It wasnt acceptable for a nice, white, Ivy League Bren like Joyce to hang w/ a bruthuh! But she came along when I had low self esteem and zero self-confidence and Befriended me. She didnt Care about my color. She saw me as just another Human Being! Another Mensch! We wrote secret little notes to each other Every Day and we Exchanged our favorite books. She lent me her copy of To Kill A Mockingbird, I lent her my copy of True Son, about a 1/2 bred Native American kid. She really helped me see life Frm a Good Perspective! No wonder Sh became a Teacher! What grades did she teach? But Jon, No Pressure Dude. If it makes you feel uncomfortable Dont Man! I Understand. Im just So Honored to have met you! Are you the youngest of the 3? C**, G** and You, J**. And my Deepest, belated Condolences to you for your Wonderful mom, your brother Cameron and your dad. We werent lovers. It wasnt that kind of party, although I wished it was.

I don't believe Mom is. I've never seen any signs that she is.

Dad on the other hand is a bit confusing. He is rather problematic in general. He loves to say and do things to hurt and upset others, even if he doesn't mean what he's saying. He absolutely acts like a racist, but I'm partially convinced that he's just doing so for attention and because he knows it upsets us. So I'm unsure if genuinely is, or if it's just an act. I hope it's just an act.

If it is genuine, then he's never hidden it. For as long as I can remember.

I've always "known" my parents had some pretty shitty political beliefs, but it was easier to pretend otherwise by never talking to them about politics. Sadly, I came across my dad posting "fuck brandon" vitriol on facebook earlier today, so now its a lot harder to pretend my parents aren't garbage people anymore. Guess it was inevitable that old white trash in Tennessee would be shitty.

My mother isn't, nor is my father to my knowledge.

But I was raised by my grandmother and she was really, really racist and also really insane.

For starters, she'd consistently throw out phrases like "I'm not racist, my grandchildren are black!" which she had nothing to do with and if she could have changed it, she definitely would have. Incidentally, she also did the same thing after I came out. "I don't hate gay people, I have a gay grandson." /eyeroll

I grew up in a poor neighborhood like projects-type apartments so a majority of my friends were black and I remember for the longest time her not wanting any of my black friends in the house - like she always had an excuse but the white boy next door was always fine.

There was also an instance where I was 10 going to school and she got into an argument with my mother and called her a "n-word lover" ....and then tried to play the victim when my mother refused to speak with her for a long time.

...yeah, I had an interesting upbringing.

Yea, my grandpa was very unabashedly racist. The running 'joke' was that it is okay to date a black woman, but not marry one.

I think you know the Yiddish word he used.

I don't think either of my parents were ever racists, as my sister had friends of varying ethnicities when we were younger and our parents never said anything bad about them, but my mother would sometimes talk about encounters with people and would specify if the person she encountered or was talking to was black. She never said anything in a negative light about the person being black, but I'm not sure why she felt the need to say a person was black.

I always knew my entire family was racist. It was learning that its socially unacceptable that changed.

Old irish catholics are going to be racist. Thats just the way of the world.

Learning my grandparents were racist was a trip. Using the n word so casually as if it was just a regular vocabulary word. Again, you grow up back in the day, thats the way it was around here. They just never changed.

Some of my peers are hella racist too though. And its almost always "im not a racist, BUUUUT"

My mom isn't. I suspect my dad was. He griped at me before for "sitting like a black person". He was already a shitty person, so adding racism to his repertoire was...a little surprising, actually, considering he loved to boast that he and Little Richard were apparently friends at one point.

Thank fuck he's dead now. My dad, that is.

My dad grew up a dirt poor Puerto Rican that had to basically work a full time job from the time he was 12 years old because his dad was a POS that left and it forced him to be the man of the house and help his mom raise his siblings.

He worked various maintenance jobs his whole life while putting himself through night school to learn HVAC. He worked with men and women of all sorts of races and religions. That man didn't have a hateful bone in his body.

They're not actually racist but they sometimes have some choice words for white people after both growing up black in Bumfucksville, Mississippi from the 60s-80s. They also say random shit about black people so I just think it's general trash talk from that era and area. For example, they have absolutely no problem with my sister's longtime white boyfriend and haven't even made one of those comments behind his back as far as I know.

I am well versed in the slurs from all of this lmfao, to the point where I have to catch myself because they made it kinda casual. But it's too late for my cat who now responds to a nickname that has mulatto in it >_>

Cool story actually. My mum wasn't very racist (she died seven years ago now) but my dad totally is. In fact one day he was waiting at the doctor's office and a saw a Muslim woman "go straight in". This made him so mad about "immigrants getting everything" that he walked out and took the money my mum had given him to buy his prescription to go drinking instead.

This ended up being the triggering event that caused my mum to finally throw him out and file for divorce after nearly 25 years of marriage.

Sometime when I was a kid, I suppose. They aren't, like, completely vile about it, but both say some damn problematic shirt on occasion. My mom can't seem to resist pointing it out if we're the only white people in a restaurant, as if she's scared that if the POC notice this, we'll be harmed. Sucks, man

My dad's racism is super weird. He'll routinely use phrases like "I love the blacks" out of nowhere, which makes me suspicious that maybe he does not love them quite as much as he professes.

Idk when I really noticed it, like single digit age. I remember me having a black friend spend the night and he said that to him. I knew it was weird, but I didn't grasp the extent at the time.
