Only essential sites. As much as I enjoy using GameFAQs, I would stop using it. The security risk seems way too high. I feel like identity fraud will skyrocket if KOSA is fully implemented.

Ok this is taking it too far IMO.

Im not going to hand out my ID to every site that asks for it, especially if its a site like gamefaqs or even youtube that I just browse casually. But if thats how you feel why are you even on the internet? If youve ever bought something online they dont know your full identity but they know a lot of it. Have you ever had a fingerprint scan or something like that to get a job? That is no different than sharing your ID. Given that the government is the one that manages all these IDs, they already know all your information.

I'm not sure a fake ID works in this situation. This isn't handing a physical card to a bouncer who just reads it with his eyes. They probably have serial codes or something that prove if an ID is real. Gamefaqs might even be looking at your social security number

All. This effects the entire internet, at least if you are American. I think they can block foreign websites to US IP addresses, even if the website doesn't takeout in this law. And all US based sites will be shut down if they don't comply and ask for ID

Again, this won't work. I think they check everything. Social security number. And all kinds of security systems fo verify an ID. They match it with the federal database. You aren't going to trick your way out of this

I highly doubt they're going to give porn sites access to every federal / state database to check this shit and additionally not everyone who uses porn sites is from America.

Yeah, as stupid as this law is, giving your fucking SSN to any website that you go to is a still like 10 levels of stupid even beyond that. It'd be a security nightmare.

But hey if it does happen, it sounds like a pretty easy way to scrape SSNs from people to use for scams, just start a porn site and let the PII roll in!

That said I've been reading this bill and I don't see shit about requirements to upload any kind of ID to anything.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1409/text?format=txt

While uploading IDs could be used to remain in compliance with the law, that doesn't seem like a requirement. The only requirement is "reasonable protection"

It's a shit law regardless but I think heralding this as the end of the Internet is a little premature.

It's not all about verification though? As far as I can tell the only age verification statute is that websites must implement an "age gate" Lots of sites already do that by asking you for your birthday.

The stuff about device based age identification is an open discussion and not a requirement or even guaranteed to happen, and nothing is said about having IDs or other PII given to websites.

Section 9 is about ID.

You're right that it doesn't say this bill is actually implementing a requirement. What the bill is doing is mandating several studies to be performed about it.

If ID has to be implemented, it really needs to be at the device level and hope that Apple or Samsung or Windows are going to safeguard that shit. Trying to put the burden on individual sites will bankrupt 99% of the internet and cause the privacy nightmares that people are worried about.

It can't be feasible to actually check every ID. At best, you'd just need a proper barcode on it which can easily be generated. With AI, it would take seconds

Im going to assume youre not American, because the entire concept of universally provided state IDs is one of the big arguing points around Voter ID laws. Since states dont automatically issue ID cards, several red states have pushed to make an ID a requirement for voting while simulatenously shuttering or restricting the hours of DMVs in higher population areas more likely to vote Democratic.

So no, a lot of people dont have a state ID because lots of states make it very difficult to get access to them.

Im interested to see how this would affect people outside the US. Id like to think that given how many important things are based in the US, holding those things hostage by expecting the entire world (sans China) to adhere to US law is something that wouldnt happen, but nowadays nothing surprises me.

Also, its only a matter of time before Australia notices this and says hey, lets do something similar.

Given how GDPR made countries outside Europe abide by it, I imagine they plan for it to work similarly.

Just like the UK wants WhatsApp etc to follow similar laws to what America wants to implement but refuses to help or say how to do it.
