I think we as a society have to embrace YOLOing more.

The mentality of grinding until ur 65 only to enjoy at best about 10 years of your life work free, have your investments pay for ur nursing home and then you die, I think is not the optimal way to live your life.

Do invest, do save for retirement, buy if you really want something just go for it. Go on that trip, make priceless memories for you and your kids. I rather be broke at 70 and living off social security lol nowing I gave my kids an amazing upbringing and memories to cherish and even pass down, than to live to 80 with a ton of money, but have lived more frugal than I would have wanted.

Id rather find a balance where i can provide my kid a memorable (but realistic to my income) upbringing while safeguarding both my own and their future.

Ive been able to provide my son with things i only wish i had as a kid, but not at the sacrifice of saving for his education or my own retirement.

A balance is best.

But for people too far in that savings/investments mindset, someone once explained to me, if he raises his kids right, he won't need to invest for their future, they will take care of themselves. If he doesn't raise his kids right, then they'd waste all his money. I know theirs obvious flaws in that kind of dichotomous thinking but the idea is accurate that more important than money is how you raise your kids. And that doesn't necessarily mean give them everything and spoil them. The opposite actually, hardship is what makes you stronger. Now when it comes to college savings, Im absolutely on the side of paying for your kids college because thats just ridiculous nowadays.

If you read the doom and gloom in here, most are reserved to the fact that theyll be living paycheck to paycheck for the rest of their lives, never buying a house, never having an IRA or 401k.
