I know why it exists, but it's still annoying to experience.

It's just an annoyance when you're new to a game and completely irrelevant on repeat plays because you're probably not going to die

Bad mechanic

I like there to be a modest to medium sort of penalty for death in a serious Action/adventure/RPG type game.

Why?

Well, because if death is meaningless there are no stakes. No stakes means to tension, no tension means flat game play.

I don't really play games with it. From my limited experience with it, its fine. I don't have strong feelings about it.

I prefer death = lose points permanently.

Skip the useless first step

I think it can work okay in some games but a lot of games that use it don't really think about the consequeces and it sort of sucks. like hollow knight for example. it's a giant metroidvania where a significant appeal of the game is just exploring the world and seeing what things you find. but if you die, now suddenly you are forced to retrace your steps and go back to the exact same place you already were. it totally ruins your ability to just explore

Any game that allows you to simply "lose" hours of your real life time, as punishment for playing the game, is doing it wrong.

Yeah, it's a decent mechanic.

I prefer the second death to just half or even quarter the points instead of losing them forever though.

Im playing through Elden Ring now and I feel like the balance is perfect. There is a risk to dying, but its not too hard or time consuming most the time to make it back to your body and pick up your stuff.

And when you do die twice, it is really frustrating, but also runes/exp isnt too hard to get in the game

This is an excellent statement of my feelings. My time is precious, sometimes I spend it on games. Any game that makes my time feel wasted is an instant turn off.

I may prefer games that have some kind of character death penalty, but I also believe it's fine for games to have a "casual" and no penalty modes for people that want to play that way.

Only problem is you might need to make different servers for multiplayer, since it will shape how people play competitively.

Honestly, it's annoying but I like it a lot better than checkpoints or game overs. At least you don't lose that time immediately and can reclaim your work instead of just resetting to before you did shutting.
