I'm assuming this is because you are using roads but technically not paying tax because you aren't buying fuel?

Its really because electric cars are associated with liberals, and gas is associated with conservatives. Thats the real reason for the fee.

I paid TN's. I have a hybrid. I could be wrong but I paid the same as an all electric vehicle despite still having to buy gas. To me, that makes hybrids not even worth it anymore. My tag last year was like $90ish. This year, it was $240ish.

200 is the tax. 85.50 is the normal registration fee for my car.
