As a serious answer I'm pretty sure it's a survival response, quickly leave the area where they made a big stink to avoid predators.

No one said domesticated cats were the smartest. My outdoor cat growing up would use the furthest corner of the yard and bolt back into the house.

Unrelated, but my cat used to supervise me every time I cleaned her litter box when she was a kitten. She would stop whatever she was doing and stand with her front paws on the rim so she could watch. I guess after a few months, she determined that I was doing an adequate job.
