I've enjoyed several Disney movies in the last decade. Moana (2016), live-action adaptation Pete's Dragon (2016), Cruella (2021), Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), and Encanto (2021), along with Disney/Pixar films Inside Out (2015), Coco (2017), Onward (2020), and Turning Red (2022).

Too much executive over sight? I remember reading that the team behind Encanto had to fight for the strong sister to actually be big and muscular looking. The execs gave in, and kids loved her.

When they let artists make decisions, and create the thing they want to make, things come out good. When the higher ups butt in and make decisions based on what they think will be popular, it turns to crap.

Strange World was good too.

Not amazing or anything, but definitely good

Too many cooks and a general unwillingness to take risks. Everything needs to be a franchise now and Disney is afraid of trying to reach out of their current comfort zone.

I really liked Encanto

Strange World should've been better than it actually ended up being. The Strange World itself lives up to that name and then some, it is incredibly creative. The actual movie is a lot weaker.

Over saturation. Disney itself had run out of steam by Lilo and we can be honest not all of their projects by then had been hits. Pixar was showing fatigue during Wall-E. Then Tangled happened and we now had two "Disney" animation studios pumping out moives.

In truth Disney's animations have actually been doing quite well. Wreck-it Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Encanto. Only Raya, Wish and Strange World(I hear it's good) have been disappointing. As for Marvel, again over saturation. Focus on getting anything out the door just so long as they have something for their quarterly releases.

Lilo and Stitch was great but the direct-to-video sequel was terrible. I mean most Disney follow-ups are terrible but this one was a real stinker. I had to stop watching half-way through.

Yeah, it's true, >.< . There's a few genuine gems (the main one being Cinderella III), but the majority of their sequels are just plain garbage. Probably made to fill some kind of quota, I imagine...

They do make good movies, the issue is that there doesn't seem to be any quality control to any of the newer films that came out or something. Like I have no idea why the movie Wish turned out the way it did, but what a terrible way to celebrate 100 years of Walt Disney with that film.

That has nothing to do with it. I'm a grown ass adult and I still enjoy many kids movies from that era. It's just that all the CGI garbage they put out now lacks soul. It's like it caters exclusively to children with ADHD. There's no subtly or undertones. It's just a barrage of bright colors and nonstop silliness.

To put it another way, it's very possible to imbue artistry into children's media. The sign of a good work of art, regardless of target audience, is the ability to put deeper meaning into things... and that's something that Disney (and many other companies, for that matter) is very lacking at these days.

That's probably more nostalgia and less those movies had soul.

I considered that possibility, but I felt this way with movies I hadn't even grown up with. For instance, I just watched Howl's Moving Castle the other day for the first time. I was completely enraptured by it. I had forgotten how captivating traditional hand animation could be. Nostalgia had nothing to do with it.

It's kind of like that notion of outrunning the bear.

They don't have to release a "good" movie. They just have to release a better movie than anyone else in the same field.

Luca, Raya, and Encanto are all recent, and all really good.

I think the problem is that they release too many films, most of which are mediocre.

Which is kinda funny, considering most of Disney's most famous "iconic/classic" works were existing stories that they just dumbed down for a kid audience.

Basically anything pre-Pixar were all established stories, going all the way back to Snow White.
