In Oklahoma, the death of a transgender student after they were assaulted in a school bathroom has sparked widespread outrage and sorrow. Nex Benedict, a sophomore at Owasso High School, was brutally beaten by other students earlier this month and died the following day. The incident has drawn national attention, with many attributing the violent act to a culture of transphobia they say is being stoked by state officials. The assault on Benedict, 16, happened on February 7, when three older girls attacked them in the girls bathroom, Tulsa NBC affiliate KJRH reports. A teacher intervened to stop the fight. Staff didn't call an ambulance, the outlet noted. Benedict's grandmother, who was their guardian, took the teenager to the hospital that day. They went back the next day after Benedict became ill. Benedict died that evening.

The grandmother, Sue Benedict, told The Independent that her child had been the subject of months of intensifying bullying that began earlier in 2023 after Oklahomas Republican-led government banned transgender students from using school bathrooms that align with their gender identity. I didnt know how bad it had gotten, she told the outlet. Benedict told their grandmother that they and another trans student had fought the other students in the bathroom, according to the Independent. The teen told her they'd hit their head on the floor. Sue Benedict said she was told by the school that her grandchild had received a two-week suspension after the assault. She said she was enraged that medical services weren't called even though Nex had bruises on their face. I was very open with my children to be who and what they thought was best, Sue Benedict told the outlet.They could talk to me about anything, as long as that respect goes both ways. A child needs to figure out who they are and what they want to be, and you cannot force it upon them. Nex did not see themselves as male or female, Sue Benedict said. Nex saw themselves right down the middle. I was still learning about it, Nex was teaching me that. This incident has ignited a debate about the safety of transgender and nonbinary students in schools, the responsibility of educational leaders to foster inclusive environments, and the potential consequences of spreading harmful ideologies.

I have a transgender nephew of the same age, who lives in Kentucky.

It's scary enough to think about as the uncle of the kid.... I don't know how my brothers family can not be terrified of shit like this.

Yeah. I know trans have it worse but this is why I get upset when LGBT people are confused why I choose to stay in the closet.

Was dating a guy and he was adamant I should come out. He lives in a city I live in the rural south.

Nah I'll stick to only family and really close friends knowing.

Kids die almost weekly because of the gun laws they protect. Even when 20 kids die in a week, theyll still do all they can 3 days later to loosen gun laws more and allow them in younger hands and less rules to get.

And to put the cherry on it, a few years ago my conservative uncle said he wished LGBT people were just treated the same as everyone else rather than given special treatment.

This was after he voted no to the same-sex marriage referendum, BTW.

Yeah but usually the shooter off themselves or is taken into custody. I get what you're saying the gun laws have to change so it isn't an issue. I'd like to think something is going to happen here.

This. The suspension is especially infuriating because it's part of schools adopting "zero tolerance" policies as a way to just not have to deal with any of it. Don't want to figure out who started it, so just punish everyone involved and be done with it.

It's a shit way of handling situations that should involve the caring and understanding of the school staff. Yet these policies remain the same, despite all of the deaths and suicides that keep happening because of bullying.

They completely and utterly failed that child. And from the article, there's another transgender student that was attacked. They better not suspend that student either.

Try them as adults and give the death penalty.

This is one of the main reasons to support Federal hate crimes laws -- it makes it possible for the Feds to intervene in cases where local law enforcement just sits around with its thumb up its collective ass (can't think why).
