We're stuck with EA/Madden for NFL and no NCAA for a decade. Why hasn't someone tried to make an actual good game with generic teams? Half the fun of those games is creating your own team or building a dynasty anyways so I think starting from scratch with generic teams could work for a lot of people

The only way something like that could sell okay if it was some crazy alternate reality football like mutant league.

Creating an NFL game without NFL teams would be like creating a Street Fighter game where every character was replaced with random people Capcom found on the street outside of their offices.

I remember Backbreaker on the PS3, it didn't have any teams and it was using the euphoria engine for physics.

It wasn't the greatest but I enjoyed it. But it didn't sell.

There are some that exist and they don't sell well at all and also as much shit as Madden gets it looks like the gameplay is still so much better

I could see a management-style game maybe working (especially if it was kinda casual like those tycoon games), but I'm not sure why anyone would want to play realistic football without any of the real teams.

They never do because sports fans are kinda [redacted] corporate slaves like that who want the team and players in the box.

Probably wouldn't with the US audience.

Football Manager is the only football (soccer, ugh) game worth playing. Steam player count says it all.
Other than flavor of the month games, it's always the most played singleplayer game.

They don't have a lot of licenses for leagues, clubs and even players, but they more or less bypass it with easy access for modders.

It's really easy to modify all the logos, uniforms, league and player names. Modding community with custom databases is also huge, you got historic databases, custom leagues and whatnot.
