It's mostly standalone for the first half of the game (it takes place somewhere around 1/3rd of the way into the main game chronologically), but you really should finish the main game before beginning the second half. It's basically Astlibra's final dungeon expanded upon using all assets from the main game for a pseudo-roguelike experience with a more extreme power curve. Can be fully completed in 20~ hours

You can get the base game on Switch now for $20, I remember some guys here saying they were waiting for a Switch release

that one bit wants you to use dash in combination with jump, so you'd take a running start

go to the pause menu, click KARON, and on the first page enable dash. then either double tap right or hold right while pressing the right face button to dash, then jump with the bottom face button

How is the plot of the game?

Main game's plot is pretty good, though there's a number of plot holes or unresolved threads throughout the story, probably due to being in development by one guy for so long. Plus it's a time travel story which already makes it kind of wack by default. The core of the story gets pretty emotional and there's some good worldbuilding, though you never get that large a glimpse of the world as a whole

The translation was ass for like a year which sorta ruined story comprehension but it got retranslated and it's great now

Gaiden's story is pretty filler and meant to just wrap up a few holes in the main story from a different perspective, but it does resolve some stuff that the main story left wide open, which ended up being nice. But in the end it's mostly gameplay, with the story serving as a bridge between Astlibra and whatever the hell KEIZO does next
