Even if the video is true, it doesn't mean anything.

You can go to a 3rd world country and spend of what you need to pay for same grocery items in US.
Yep. It means nothing when you don't know how much money those people are making in that country.

You linked to garbage propaganda and called it fact.

And nothing you've done in the intervening span has changed my mind (or a lot of other minds apparently, based on this topic) about you being MAGA.

So yeah. I'll continue to treat you as a MAGA. Don't like it? Doors over there. You won't be missed.

That sounds like a big deal until you realize the median hourly wage in America is about $17 and some change, which is like $700 a week assuming a 40-hour work week. The $400 for the American groceries is more than half our median weekly pay
No one spends $400 a week on groceries. An actual typical grocery trip in America would cost significantly less than half that.

They need to start using Costco, local vegetable stands and shops, and shop around a bit. $400/week screams full retail markup prices at places like Whole Foods or something.

I am a lifelong NYCer, but I grew up in a Taiwanese-Chinese household for 40+ years. So I know where to go for deals. My family drilled into my head never to pay more than 60% of 'suggested retail'. You just gotta be vigilant, and find the right stores, outdoor markets, fruit/veggie stands, etc. The internet has made it a lot easier the past 15 years. I do all of this, in order to compensate for the higher real estate prices we have to pay, though.

Btw, try places like Aldi and Lidl if you have one near you. Also try WinCO, MarketBasket if in the region:

We spend about $400 a week to feed ourselves (family of 4).

And we're already going to like 3 different stores. It's probably easy to min/max your grocery shopping when it's just you. But when you're working full time, raising a family, doing extracurriculars, planning meals, and dealing with specific diets/pickiness you just don't have time for that.

FYI not defending that idiot Tuck here, just sharing my particular experience with the wild consumer prices going on.

Only for one night. My parents were 65, so I didn't get much opportunity to do late night stuff. It was alright. I went out a ton for Chinese food in Flushing back in the 2000s, so my standards for Chinese cuisine is pretty high.

I have actually been to most of Taiwan. As in the entire island, but not outlying islands like Kinmen. Really enjoyed it, but it's a little awkward with the degree of Japan worship you see there. My wife's mainland Chinese mother was actually offended by how much some of them love Japan and we live in Japan (average people in Japan seem more critical of Japan than people in Taiwan). We occasionally got treated like shit for the obvious mainland accent only to get a hero's welcome once we revealed we live in Japan.

They literally advertise Febreze as if it's Japanese. It's written in Katakana and says number one in Japan on it. We have Febreze in Japan and it's obviously an American product and no one thinks about it really. Random Japanese everywhere. Stores love advertising things as Japanese but rarely do you see something advertised as Taiwanese. One road stop we went to was like being transported into a Japanese theme park. All the vending machines were Japanese, all the food was Japanese, it was weird. I am also pretty sure they somehow have more Mos Burgers than McDonald's and I never even saw a Burger King. Taiwanese Mos Burger is better than Japan though in my opinion (it's red and white instead of green and white though, maybe to stress how Japanese it is).

No doubt that prices have increased, partly due to inflation and party due to corporate greed, and that is bad. Obviously if you are buying food for a family your weekly budget would increase much more then someone buying for one person would. My weekly food budget is maybe five bucks more on average now then it was in 2019, and I really haven't changed my buying habits. But I guess if you were already buying for four people and already spending three hundred dollars per week that increase would be much larger and much more noticeable.

Problem with buying for more people is that you can't go bargain hunting as much. You are forced to buy things at full retail price more than you'd want than if you were only shopping for 1-2 people.

On the other hand, should probably also be buying in bulk to compensate for it.

Is this how it's always been in Taiwan, or is it steadily increasing anti-China sentiment in the younger generations leading them to prefer Japan? I know that at this point, a majority of Taiwanese no longer consider themselves Chinese. (Which is completely fair, IMO. 74 years of physical and cultural separation from the mainland is plenty of time for a distinct national identity to emerge.)

I am also pretty sure they somehow have more Mos Burgers than McDonald's and I never even saw a Burger King. Taiwanese Mos Burger is better than Japan though in my opinion (it's red and white instead of green and white though, maybe to stress how Japanese it is).
Which is funny since in Japan itself, Mos Burger is #2 to McDonald's.
