"Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We shouldn't have done it [...] We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog." ~ Oleg Gazenko

Before the launch, one of the mission scientists took Laika home to play with his children. In a book chronicling the story of Soviet space medicine "Laika was quiet and charming ... I wanted to do something nice for her: She had so little time left to live." ~ Vladimir Yazdovsky

"Hmmm, we're not sure how to create something that can safely re-enter the atmosphere once it makes it into space. As an experiment, let's see what happens if we send a dog. OH it turns out it dies in agony."

Well no shit comrade. WTF.

Whats the difference between this and the millions of animals that die in medical testing, except that they felt afterward that they didnt get enough info to make it worth it

like they did do it for a reason at least, for space research.

How was it a critical step in the space race to kill a dog?

They knew the dog was going to die in re-entry. They did not learn a thing. It provided nothing. Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable, it had always been accepted that Laika would die

I mean youre not really approaching it in good faith when you word it like this. Do you really believe they decided to send a dog out just because? With no intention to learn things that would go towards human beings traveling through space safely? Didnt the Soviets get the first man and woman in orbit

I don't think we knew if living organisms could survive being in orbit at that point in time.

Because they were the first ones to send a living thing into space.

They did not learn a thing.

That is not true. They were pretty sure it wasn't going to survive on the way back down but at the time they weren't sure it would even survive going up. They say they didn't learn enough to justify it, and that's a fair assessment but it wasn't like they learned nothing. The project was predominantly driven by dick measuring government psychos in the USSR at the time and not by researchers. The only thing that mattered to them was that they did it before America.

That was how he worded it

Do you really believe they decided to send a dog out just because? With no intention to learn things that would go towards human beings traveling through space safely?

Yes and so did they

Didnt the Soviets get the first man and woman in orbit

Yes but not because they killed Laika

Confirming the blatanly obvious that they already knew isn't learning anything. They knew they could get a living being into space and they knew it would die on re-entry.

That's like saying "You don't know running someone over with a train going at 400MPH will kill them until we try it." and then claim you're learning something.

Also, how is confirming what you already knew a critical step for the space race?

I feel like you're arguing for the sake of arguing here. You're literally arguing against the scientists who killed the dogs and can't even explain how.

Not related, but Russia has history with killing dogs. They tried to train dogs to target German tanks while the dogs where wearing an explosive harness. Didn't work because the Russians used their own tanks to train the dogs instead German tanks, big difference is the tanks ran off of for fuel.

tldr; Fuck Russia, they hate the goodest bois
