are there really no takers for the job?

I dont need to. I already have a career locked down.

But other people with no skills or qualifications need to start somewhere and hit up Walgreens to work there

The pharmacy profession is not in a good place right now. The major chains like Walgreens understaff and overwork their staff to the bone to the point where it was only in the last couple years that they were forced to give pharmacists a lunch. And even then its not guaranteed.

Jfc this topic.

I recently left Walgreens. The company has one of the worst cultures I've ever worked for.

As a Shift Lead I closed every Friday and Saturday. And every fucking Friday and Saturday I had at most two closers, and it was incredibly rare to close with someone else 21 or over.

So yea. You couldn't get help because the poor, struggling mega billion dollar company refuses to pay people appropriately or to actually schedule people.

I guess this was the more succinct response than what I gave.

It was hysterical how policy, obviously, was a very hard 'do not approach' to people actively stealing for extremely obvious safety reasons. But of course the staff would look at me crazy whenever I refused to 'confront' someone.

Like I got a 1% raise from$18 on my once a year raise. Get all the way fucked.

Severely underpaid, no benefits, insanity hours (10-12 hour shifts or clopens/doubles are super common) and infinite cross-department forced work that you didn't sign up for. Some added funyuns are threat of theft or robbery, forced to stay due to constant callouts, no weekends off, did I mention no benefits whatsoever?

The big box companies do not care.

It's not that nobody wants to do these jobs. It's that nobody wants to do these jobs for the pay being offered.

If these companies have to choose being being understaffed and accepting a lower profit margin, they're going to be understaffed.

When I worked at wal-mart from 2012 to 2018 the staffing and coverage was okay or good at the start but then after a while something changed. What used to be a decently staffed store then became skeleton crews at most hours of the day.

Corporate has decided that they can save money by having the fewest number of people on at most times of the day and save money.

That's the answer. People do want to work. People work jobs for the same or worse pay that are much crappier than working generic corporate retail, but these companies know they can staff the bare minimum and people will still shop there.

It was around that time they figured out that the shrinkage from theft was more or less static per market and wasn't correlated to employee count, so they torpedoed staffing to still come out ahead on profit. Most of these stores run on a cannibalistic mindset, it's wild.

This is true. Once they learn that you will wait 20 minutes for your Tums and you'll come back anyway you're going to be doing that a lot more.

They'll fix their staffing issues if they have to to get you and to get other people to spend money with them.

Retail companies are pushing omnichannel marketing plans to take people out of stores and utilize delivery or pick up. Walgreens makes over 75% of their revenue on prescription sales, the front end retail portion is mostly based on beauty sales. The other shit is just considered self serve convenience items and they're monitored by KPIs but are only a fraction of how a store is performing. That's why a shift lead who basically counts money and voids transactions makes less than a new uncertified pharmacy tech off the street.

Walmart is a reverse model of pharmacies as they can basically subsidize the cost of prescriptions for uninsured people to try and get them in the door to buy groceries and other goods

Places intentionally understaff and overwork in order to make the most money possible. They can get away with it even more if they're a union-busting corporation like Walmart.

Which also means people are waking up to that fact and no longer want to work in retail.
