I don't know about best but I'm the only person here I've ever seen acknowledge Owata 2.
It's kind of cool. It's a sequel to a flash game from 2005, it was made a few years ago to coincide with the end of flash.

Conquest of the Crystal Palace on NES. It has one of the few gaming mysteries left for me. I don't know if you can replay the game once you beat it with one crystal out of three total to get the true ending.

Deus Ex Machina on the ZX Spectrum

The soundtrack is spectacular and it is a trippy, singular game experience.

I would also mention Gadget: Invention. It is pretty much super creepy and feels like a Lynch movie.

Glover. You are a glove. A magical spell casting glove in a game that is one giant escort mission for a rubber ball. It's got a shark that wears sunglasses.

It's Glover. It's just Glover.

Made by the same company who also made the A2 Racer games, the pinnacle of the racer genre. They focused totally on business software eventually because they felt they made it unfair for the competition, but have recently decided to get back into videogames. The Dutch are among the finest in the industry. Toki Tori, Killzone, Horizon, Reus and De Blob are undoubtedly among your favorites. We even gave you the amazing Philips CD-i.

I feel like I'm the only one on CE who has played Robot Alchemic Drive on ps2. It never was a very famous game I don't think

You remotely control a giant robot but you also control your character too. So like you move your person around the city but also have to go into robot control mode where you are using a device to make the robot move. So you habe to be aware of your person's placement so you don't get stepped on

But you can even stand on top of your robot but it's very hard to do without falling off

It's one of the most unique games I have ever played. I wish it would get a remake or sequel

I feel like I talked about Operation Weather Disaster so much, it became somewhat memorable to people, but nevertheless, it's a fun edutainment point-and-clicker from the 90s that could always use more love. It also gave me one of my fave memetic images: the guy screaming (actually cackling).

I played R.A.D. That was so weird to control, it's something I want to go back and try now that I'm not a dumb kid.

My entries are...

Gotcha Force, a gamecube arena fighter game that's been selling for 200+ since I was a child. The story is for 7 year olds, the voice acting sounds like they pulled literal children off the street and gave them one take, and the music is either love it or hate it, but the gameplay is INCREDIBLE and the character variety is immense. I dumped probably 600+ hours into it as a kid and only stopped because my disks kept getting scratched. It never got a sequel, but it lives on as a little series you might've heard of called Gundam VS (I've never had the chance to play any but whenever I watch clips of it I usually see animations straight from GF within 10 seconds, blew my mind the first time).

If you were one of those kids who loved collecting random toys and pretending to make them fight each other I can't recommend it enough. Almost everything you fight against can be used by you if you take the time to farm it (and boy will some of them take you a while, but there are... ways... to circumvent that). Best 6/10 game I've ever played, been in my top 5 for 2 decades now.

-

Steel Lancer Arena International, AKA S.L.A.I. The only mech game I liked more than Armored Core, though the gameplay is much more grounded (literally). Apparently it's the semi-sequel to a game on the Xbox called Phantom Crash, but that doesn't really matter. The basic idea is that you're given 1 of 5 starter mechs, then you get dumped into a arena with ~7 others and you fight until you either die or decide to leave through one of the entry doors. Every kill you get gives you money, there are some zones in each map that will have money/HP/ammo dropped in every so often, and your goal is to kill every other player (they respawn so you have a constant flow of enemies to deal with, but if you die you're booted out to the hub) to cause the "ranker" to spawn in so you can kill them then leave the map and steal their status as king of the map+division.

There's a bunch of divisions, and there's nothing stopping you from going into any division whenever you happen to be around except the high likelyhood you'll get your ass absolutely blasted for the sheer gall of showing up to a B rank match with some piece of shit you got yesterday that still has its base paintjob. The goal is to clear every map on most/every rank, which inevitably requires you to find a mech type you like and continually customize it to your liking (and the customizing is very detailed, you can fine tune individual parts to fit your needs. My favorite discovery was taking a grenade launcher and making it as light as possible, which would make the damage absolutely crap but the blast radius absurdly large which made it perfect for knocking people out of invisibility so I could actually lock onto them and melee them to death) and as you do you'll get fed a pretty decent story.

When you're not in an arena you're on one of a handful of servers doing typical mech builder stuff like buying parts, paintjobs, and avatars, customizing the mech, buying animal AI partners that'll chatter at you (and gameplay wise determine how your lock on functions and be your "voice" during cutscenes because you're a blank slate protag), buying licensed music (in my case a ton of buttrock) and making playlists to listen to while you fuck everyone up, and looking at the in-game schedule to plan around which maps have which rank matches coming up. (And possibly going into debt if you keep getting your ass kicked and can't make repair costs.)

-

Finally I've got Furi. The gist is you're a prisoner doing a prison break, but it's a boss rush game with ~11 bosses. There's no mooks, no filler, you (auto) walk to the next fight (you CAN manually control it and there's a few secrets, but it's not really worth doing) while you decompress from the fight you just did and your partner hypes up you and the next boss, then you fight to the death and repeat the process. Each boss has a bunch of phases, and each phase has 2 sub parts. The first part is more or less a top down shooter/bullet hell, followed by a melee section. Then the final phase is the boss pulling out all the stops.

The story's solid but not particularly deep. It's more about the vibe than the plot. The music is FANTASTIC, I still regularly listen to most of its OST. The graphics are a bit rough because it's an indie title made on a budget, but they got the Afro Samurai mangaka to do the character designs so it's got its own very unique look to it. And of course the gameplay is great (but fairly hard, depends on how used you are to action games), which it needs to be considering that's like 90% of the experience. And unlike the other two games I listed, this one is easily accessible right now for pretty cheap, it's 20 bucks right now on steam and goes on sale fairly frequently.

It's a great game to knock out over a day or 3, and it's got a hard mode that actually changes every phase of every fight instead of just being numbers tweaks so it's worth a replay if you still want more at the end. Worst case it's a kickass 20 dollar album with a pretty good game attached.

-

Actually I lied, one more. For all the couples out there, from the same designers as Furi is Haven. The gist is that you play as 2 lovers that've just landed on an alien planet and you wander around while you figure things out (both about the planet and their relationship).

It's the opposite of Furi, very story/character focused, gameplay is you wander around an overworld and then get into turn based but extremely simple combats. It's a mostly chill narrative experience, I don't recommend playing it if you're single because you'll probably constantly feel like a third wheel, but it has couch co-op and gaming couples tend to love it because it almost feels like going on a double date (allegedly, I've never done such a thing).

It's a very love it or hate it game, but it's very unique and worth a look at the least. And again, the OST is great, so worst case it's another 25 dollar album with an alright game attached. I played through it once, did almost 100%, and my playtime on steam is 16 hours. But I played on hard (not worth it tbh)
