I guess "not significant" isn't the right thing to say as I'm sure more exposure means more sales. But rather, I'm sure the games were going to be successful either way. Does that first year sale count the Japanese only PS3 version? I mean the game has been rereleased several times as well as going up on GamePass as well as both the original and Royal versions being offered on PS Plus. That's what I meant when I said it was going to have a lot of exposure either way.

Seriously I just want more storage for pc and consoles now instead of better performance. I don't really need games to be prettier than what they look on ps5.

I hate how I have to delete stuff all the time

Also to be fair, I think the first Fire Emblem in USA released AFTER Melee, so most Americans wouldn't have had a way to play it or opportunity to even know about it, so it's a little different compared to Persona.

It won't sell as much as Call of duty, but the genre had multiple games that sold millions in the last years. Although Yakuza does have what you are saying

Turn-based JRPG remains my favorite genre ever. Dragon Quest being my favorite RPG series. I'm glad turn based is still doing well in Persona, Dragon Quest, Yakuza, and others.
This. I love turn-based JRPGs. They're very comfy and fun

The guys who make Dragon Quest?
The very same. IIRC they've wanted to make the new DQ more "mature" and "interactive" so there's a possibility of that being action based too.

Persona isn't more popular now because of Smash, it's more popular because 5 was the first one to see real success in the US and they've started porting the games to all platforms instead of being PS exclusive

Or maybe just maybe we are both correct? I tried Persona 5 because smash made me curious about it and I know multiple people who did the same.

Now you can see it on Reddit as well

What TC is saying is real; there are people who invalidates turn base JRPGs. Acting like these people don't exist or it never happened or it only happens here is just silly.

That topic is from over 5 years ago....

Back when the genre arguably was still in a huge slump. Which obviously isnt the case anymore. Although granted most of the more successful Jrpgs owe more to their branding, history and growth more so then actual quality. Persona 5 being good examples of this. As the fanchise wasnt huge out of the gate but the games quality and word of mouth over the years eventually led up to P5s success.

Thanks in no small part to its consistency compared to other series like Tales of whose games were hit or misses and eventually fell off.

Have you ever read the comment sections of videos on Yakuza games or Baldur's gate 3 being successful? There's always people whining about turn based rpg

There's even people who asked Larian studio to patch the game so it would not be turn based anymore

Thank you for proving my point

A lot of people preferred the older Final Fantasy and the turn based Yakuza over the action ones. So that "despite" thing doesn't work. I guess FF16 sold 3 millions DESPITE being a hack n slash

Come on, a lot of people bought divinity 2 were not a big fan of the story, but enjoyed the battle system

I think people play rpgs mostly because of the total package of story, characters and music, overall gameplay. The battle system being good is an added bonus. And what made jrpgs jump into the spotlight with FF7 was mostly Squares marketing about its graphics and cinematics. And every commercial you see for FF since then has focused on those aspects. Turn based CAN be fun, FFX has what I believe the pinnacle of turn based battles, but its just one aspect of what made the game so popular, which imo were the characters.

And yes, I believe FFXVI sold pretty well despite being hack and slash (cause the battle system wasnt THAT great), the same way BG3 showed us how turn based can be irrelevant to sales when the overall game is simply good. IDK man...make a great game and simply it will sell. This is the age of twitch, tik tok and influencers. There are no more hidden gems anymore that are critically succesful, but commercially flopping cause theyre a niche genre. Monster hunter now sells 10+ million copies. Persona is now a multi million seller, Armored Core came back and the best selling game in its history...etc.

Most turn based and action RPGs are boring because they lack depth. Mash a button to win isn't fun whether it's turn based or action. The good turn based games often require some thought and strategy (think Shin Megami Tensei or Divinity OS 1&2/Baulder's Gate 3). Same with good action RPGs (stuff like the Souls games or Dragon's Dogma).

So saying X genre is boring, is probably due to many of the games in the genre being brain dead where the combat just wastes your time.

tbh if the game cant strike a fine line between button mashing and strategic gameplay, its literally unplayable to me
if i cant (after a brief investment in grinding) button mash random/overworld/dungeon non-boss encounters, ive absolutely no interest in playing it
there was a fairly high profile RPG a few gens ago (lost odyssey? maybe?) that made you target weakness on even trash encounters
it was laborious, not fun

i like strategic gameplay when it's novel and meaningful
but aint no one playing dark souls looking forward to having to dodge roll for 10 seconds before hollow soldier lv1 gives them an opening

and tbh i feel like the turn based RPGs that do emphasize strategy, too often fall into making you strategize for encounters that don't reward it, leaving it to feel like an unsatisfying chore
