Just take is slowly. Each Mech anime approaches the theme differently. Gundam is different from Zoids and both are different than Escaflowne or Kuromukori. All in all, avoid Evangelion as your first mech anime like the plague. If one is too much for you, try a different one.

Evangelion is ass. Don't get baited by people singing its praises.

Watch something good like Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans instead.

Actual Mecha shows you're gonna hear/talk about with other Mecha people
  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Escaflowne
  • Full Metal Panic!
  • Code Geass
  • Any Mobile Suit Gundam show
As for Gundam, It comes in two flavors. They are either about a politics and the tragedies of war or about the powers of the Gundams, almost in Power Rangers way. If you're unsure about it, I'd recommend watching MSG: Thunderbolt December Sky. It's not the best, but I find it has all the elements that are fundamentally Gundam in a 60min movie. I think it's a great barometer as to whether you'll enjoy Gundam, without having to commit a much larger story.

There is no "required" stuff, just watch what looks interesting to you. If you're looking for recommendations though, I'll second the other comments saying Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne, and (though you'd have to research which individual entries interest you) the Gundam franchise. For others that haven't been mentioned yet, I'll throw in Eighty-Six and Granbelm.

Gurren Lagann, Evangelion, Gundam(there's a ton here, hard to tell what you'd like but my favorites are G and IBO), and I guess Code Geass but I never think of that as a mecha show tbh. Gargantia was a fun enough watch, plus I like Chamber(the mech) a lot as a character.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, that drill one abbreviated as TTGL (I'm not looking up the name to spell it correctly), and probably some 80s show I never watched or the original Gundam series. Maybe Code Geass too would be up there too.

I'm not super into mecha anime, so I'm going off what I hear people who are, or at least into anime in general, talk about. I feel like there's some older mecha show who shaped the future of the subgenre from that point on, like Sailor Moon did for magical girl series.

I like Gurren Lagann but that chunk of episodes in the future (like 18-23 I think?) really drag that show down

To elaborate/clarify more on the Gundam franchise: There's the main "Universal Century" timeline that starts all the way back with the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime and should be followed in order, and then there are several "Alternate Universe" Gundam anime that aren't connected to the UC timeline at all and can be watched as standalone stories, such as Gundam Wing, G Gundam, Gundam Seed, and the most recent Witch From Mercury. Considering the heavy time investment needed to watch the UC timeline and how old and dated some of it is, I would recommend any franchise newcomers start by picking out one or two of the AU series. Then if you like those enough that you get curious about the UC timeline, you can consider jumping into that later on.

More info, including a watch order of the UC timeline if you dare undertake it, can be found here:

The only downside is that it ended on a cliffhanger. And from what I've read, we aren't getting another season so I may end up having to actually read the manga to finish the story.

Yeah I heard about the sequel novel. I didn't find out much about what happens in it though. Just bits I think. I'm so annoyed there wasn't a new season

Hells yeah, RahXephon doesn't get nearly enough love in my view. Kept seeing people suggest EVA and I couldn't help but wonder why? We've grown up, we can move beyond our emo edgy phase.

As for the Gundams, I'd suggest something like 00 or Iron Blood Orphans. "Newer" and stand alone. Haven't seen Witch yet so can't say one way or the other. Seed was okay but people get opinionated on it.

Gurren Lagann and Big O are also fun ones I'd second.

any Mobile Suit Gundam, or Gundam Wing...

Macross (though its a ***** to find) but Robotech is an acceptable substitute...

Evangelion is overrated nonsense, watch Raxephon, raxephon is Evangelion but good and not pretentious gibberish...

Gatchaman

Patlabor (the first movie is meh though, 2 and 3 are better)
