When I play a Pokemon game, I decide on my team of 6 before I start playing and those are the only 6 Pokemon I catch (unless the game gates areas off by needing a certain amount.)

I've decided on my team of 6 before I started playing in the past, but I catch as many as I damn well please. And sometimes I end up adding more to a rotation. And in Shield, due to the forced EXP share, I rotated so many, and it was awesome. I used well more than the 8 I'd initially planned on rotating.

If you play like Ushiro does, what about shinies? Do those get KOed because they're not one of the 6?

Shinies don't really hold any value if you play the games like he does.

Shinies mean nothing to me, yeah. Ditto for the idea of a "Shiny hunt".

I will probably try and catch a shiny if I see one just for the hell of it, but it would just be a whim, wouldn't use that Pokemon unless it was already part of the plan.

i cant remember the last game where i didnt at least fill out the regional dex

I usually plan my team, but I played Arceus a little more freely and enjoyed that a lot. It was nice to see the team come together throughout the game.

SV I tried to avoid it but I want to use powerful stuff so I ultimately took a peek at some stats.

I think in future if playing a game with not many new Pokemon I will let the team build more naturally. It was fun

shiny hunting extended my Scarlet play so much and it's the reason i can always come back to the game for more

and yeah I like going in blind on Pokemon designs and discovering what I like

I used to bring a bred Mawile in as my team center cuz I bred a perfect IV one back in XY, but then my save corrupted when it crashed during a wonder trade and I lost everything. I'd probably still be bringing in Mawiles to new games to this day if that never happened

And I have run into wild shiny pokemon more in this game than I have done so ever before in my life

It just makes me feel so happy and nostalgic for reasons I cant explain.

That said there are some good themes in the game that Toby didnt work on, like Tera Raids and Penny's Battle.

Every new generation is fun to play because the formula is fantastic and also exactly because I enjoy playing freely like that.

Playing the second game for both SS and SV has been dull though. Once the general magic Pokemon feeling is gone, we're left with some pretty bad games by the standards.

I played Crystal on 3DS for the first time (never played GS either) in the last few months and had a miserable time with it, SV were way more fun. As soon as I caught all the legendaries I put everything in Poke Transporter, didnt even finish Kanto because it was so boring. I played HeartGold back when it came out though and that probably still ranks above Violet for me

Legends Arceus was fun.

For the first area, then it got kind of old. The concept was good, but it doesn't really pick back up until the end game. Also relied too much on crafting. Not everything has to have crafting!

What? that's bull...
I just talked about this with friends a few days ago, after I watched a video of Palworld and it has crafting and gathering materials and it looked soooo boring.
Wow so fun chopping a tree for 15 seconds
So I said "come to think of it, I never played a game with crafting" but then I thought "wait Legends Arceus has crafting"
But then I realized how much of a non-issue the crafting is in Legends Arceus - almost every item can be bought (which is a little bit more expensive than to craft)
And farming materials is fast and "as you go". You don't have to stop to chop a tree, you just run/ride and pick it up and continue on your way

Palworld is a bad example of tedious crafting because it's one of the few survival/crafting games where you can fully automate almost all resource gathering in the first few hours.

Just stopping in to say that Arceus rules and it's the best Pokmon since B/W.

I actually went back and revisited Sun/Moon the other day. I actually found it to be just as good as i remembered. Team skull and alolan forms - whats not to love? They used new systems to get rid of HMs. Banging soundtrack. Why did people hate this gen so much back then?

Sun/Moon were hated because they are so unbearably slow. Getting stopped around every single corner by one of your rivals makes the game a miserable experience to play through - they try and play up some of the cinematics, but it's on the 3DS, they didn't have much to work with. Not a bad generation by the new standards, they're better than X/Y and added good QoL features, plus the plot and story battles are way more interesting than anything else in the franchise since Gen 5 (some bits of Gen 9 might be exceptions, I've heard a few good things but generally refuse to buy the Switch games).

I literally had to force myself to finish Moon. I just found it so boring and I can't pinpoint any particular reason why. Like, in theory it had a lot going for it, but it just didn't work for me.
