I don't remember any JRPGs attracting controversy from religious groups besides Pokemon.

If Final Fantasy Tactics didn't drew controversy, then Xenosaga shouldn't.
Tactics was showing how corrupt churches actually are.

xenoSAGA? the story was so convoluted and pointless, why would anyone even care. none of it makes any sense and it isn't even compelling. there's not really anything to be controversial about, it's like ridiculing a story written by an elementary school student.

Plenty did, I'm aware of a lot of it because a friend of mine growing up would play RPGs at my house because his parents wouldn't let him play satanic games like Final Fantasy.

It's why the English version translation is funky at times. It was almost completely done by one guy because everyone else was harassed into quitting. Also, the localization tools at the time were essentially just an excel spreadsheet. A lot of his complaints about the process were taken seriously by Square and they built more tools based on his advice. It's actually a pretty important game because of that silver lining.
