yeah like the percentage who like it has gone down a bunch over the yrs. Wonder why. This movie and english patient were referenced in seinfeld. At least i liked titanic more than patient. Ripley was minghella's best movie imo

It was always seen as pretty hokey, but the second half saved it from being widely condemned.

i don't know it was pretty well liked when it was released. Easily it became the highest grossing movie ever during the year it was released or earlier the next yr. Released at holiday time. Still better than avatar movies.

It was a spectacle movie that coasted by on its set design and production value.

Not unlike Avatar.

The Jack/Rose romance worked fine at the time, but is one of those stories that gets worse the more you thing about it. And people have had almost 30 years to think about it.

unlike avatar ppl do at least remember plot details of titanic and it does get parodied

granted ppl remember like 2 or 3 scenes and those are all that get parodied but it does happen

also reminder james cameron gets very very upset if you critique the movie

No, I mean that in 1998, when seeing the movie at the first time, it was enjoyable enough to watch. But as time passes and you think about it more, the worse and worse it gets, until it reaches the meme level it is, now.

Like a piece of fruit that looks decent enough, but ends up being rotten once you bite into it.

James Cameron is a child of a man, with big dreams who forgot what made people like his movies in the first place.

Between disappearing into CGI Narnia with Avatar, and shitting up the Terminator story yet again, he's forgotten that Aliens and T2 weren't beloved just because of their effects; they were excellent narratives with characters that people fell in love with, too.

The man basically decided he wants to be Classy Michael Bay, now. You know, minus the sexual Assault.

That said, he's still apparently grossly unpleasant to work with, based on accounts from actors on set. Either way, I don't give a damn if he's protective of Titanic.

why would cameron even be most protective of titanic than any of his other movies, if this is true?

It was a big event when it came out, pretty much the Gone With The Wind of our generation.

So of course a lot of people are going to have rose tinted glasses at the time for something like that, plus subsequent generations just aren't going to see what the fuss is about.

That said, I still think it's a good movie, though very soapy in parts... lol.

yeah iirc it easily shattered the highest grossing movie ever record when it came out. What parts did you consider "soapy" I liked it more than his avatar movies

The literal steamy sex scene is the first thing that comes to my mind for this.
