but it's missing much of the core functionality from the original

It's almost certainly illegal under EU law to detect an adblocker without permission.

Important part, that you'll eventually get through from scrolling down twitter (or nitter, if you won't log into twitter)
https://iabeurope.eu/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/20160516-IABEU_Guidance_AdBlockerDetection.pdf

this is an interesting bit:
Publishers may want to err on the side of caution and obtain consent for the
use of ad blocker detection scripts to preempt and avoid any legal challenges.
Yeah... that's not going to end up as obscured and abusive dark patterns at all, right?

Publishers could use two practical solutions to request and obtain consent for
the use of ad blocker detection: a consent banner or a consent wall.
Publishers could also make use of a combination of the two to complement
each other.
...and that was fast.

Because Google purposefully slows Firefox down. Was just reading about it today that videos take upwards of 5 seconds longer to even load in.

these are the important parts:

Redditor vk6_ has shared a video showing a five-second delay when loading into a YouTube video on Mozilla Firefox. Upon manually changing the user agent on the browser to Chrome, the five-second delay no longer appears. The video has been reproduced below:
Google is targeting useragent-string (or maybe not, according to the reddit nerds), so there's a fairly-trivial workaround of messing with the browser's reported useragent.

However, multiple users have reported the same across Firefox and Edge. The users claim to have experienced the delay without any extensions enabled, indicating that the delay could be on a per-account basis. The delay also does not trigger just once; it is reportedly triggered every time YouTube links are opened in a new tab.
Or, an even more trivial workaround of just not logging into youtube, which seems to also help hose the anti-adblock mechanism.

The non-answer answer from google is even more scummy.
To support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube, weve launched an effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience. Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using.

There's no "urging" here. It's just an arbitrary five seconds of the UI pretending to load.

Fun fact, in my embedded systems course in college we were struggling with commands and them not properly ordering. Teacher came by and said "put a task delay right there" and it worked.

That's what Google has done here, but to make things worse!
