No. There is still a strong audience for it which means its not outdated. Its that simple. Sure it can be innovated on like anything but if people keep playing it, then its not outdated.

not at all, and the notion that they are is pretty stupid
most of them are too simple and too easy, and just throwing in action commands or some convoluted "hit the weakness" system doesn't really do much to make them more complex or anything, despite what people will say

i just want these games to have encounters dangerous enough to justify using and experimenting with the options in my toolkit. grandia has a great battle system but there's very little decision-making when you can just do the same stuff every time. mario rpgs have timing as a mechanic and while it can be fun, there isn't enough variety to the attacks you dodge and sometimes the games can feel like they drag on a bit due to them

I think it depends on implementation.

like, if it's your average turn-based RPG, that makes no consideration for stuff like placement, distance, terrain, etc., and all you do is scroll down a menu, then it can feel antiquated.

'No'

If anything, because of games like 'Wasteland 2'. I'd love to see other franchises take at least one shot at making a turn-based game that utilizes height or cover.

It's a perfectly fine genre, not for everyone.

I personally don't like it, for example back in the day FFXII's gambit system was great.
I wish more RPGs used something similar.

Turn based needs some depth to it to get me these days.

Like Divinity, BG3, Solasta, they all do turn based but with something more in positioning and environment and whatnot.

XCOM as well but I haven't actually played that one.

Meanwhile, turn based that's just "my four dudes wait on this line to stand and deliver to your four dudes waiting on that line" is gonna need a lot to be as interesting.

Persona 5 was still super fun, so the problem lies with those other games. Maybe don't be boring like dq with a bland as possible turn based system and actually have some style like persona.

Because just simply making action rpg isn't the answer. SE's garbage games like ff 15/16 and the 7 remake travesty are some of the worst action rpgs I've ever tried, so it's not the system it's how you use it.

To each their own.

I do wish all RPGs forward would let me see enemies so that I can choose to engage battle against them or avoid them, the latter especially if my party about to kick the bucket and risk losing all of my hours-load of progress on a Game Over.

No. I prefer turn based combat when Im controlling a party, and action based combat when Im controlling a single character.

I would also add that Id like to see a game with a toggle that switches between on screen encounters and random ones. On screen encounters are ideal in every situation besides grinding, in which case they suck. Its vastly preferable to just be able to walk back and forth in a line to spawn more enemies for grinding than it is to have to waste time exiting the area and re-entering it to respawn the small number of fixed encounters you probably actually care about.

I'm not saying it wasn't an issue; I'm saying most turn based RPGs stopped doing that stuff.

Dragon Quest 11 does something close to this. The 2D mode has random encounters, but the 3D model doesn't.

Getting an extra turn for hitting weakness is not exactly depth either.

I've always thought it was stupid ever since psx days. Like, why would you and the enemy stand there and wait for one another to punch each other in the face? At least with srpgs your positioning, elevation and environment played a big role on how fights go

Im aware, but the way that works is kind of iffy. My understanding is that you basically travel back in time to a certain checkpoint when you switch and then you can basically play through the game to get back to where you were. This can be repeated infinitely to dupe stuff, etc. For now at least, Im trying to avoid that as I dont want the chests I opened already to be closed again.

Im doing a Full Draconian playthrough of it, almost at the end of act 1. I farmed 99 of every seed because the games hard with Full Draconian, and I thought I might need them in Act 2. So Im just taking a break before I figure out what I want to duplicate before I talk to the old man in Arboria and continue the game.

In DQ specifically, you only really want to grind metal enemies, and DQXI gives you a way to infinitely spawn them with Electro Light, so there would be little point to random battle grinding there anyway.

Depends on what type of turn based you're talking about. BG3 is turn based but it differs greatly from the traditional Final Fantasy combat of four guys standing in a row taking turns whacking each other. Likewise that differs from the style of combat in the original fallouts and even games like Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous.

While I don't mind the old school FF style of combat I think games like BG3 and the DoS series are the future of turn based combat.
