Im actually incredibly ignorant on this so sorry. I have an IPhone 7 that is falling apart and Ive had enough of it. Im looking to buy a new iPhone. I thought about switching to a different type of phone but I dont want to go through that headache tbh. I just want all my stuff to carry over and be done with it.

I rarely buy a new phone. I had an IPhone 4 and bought an IPhone 7 off of a guy who worked at the AT&T store. My 4 broke and he had a 7 his wife didnt want anymore so he sold it to me for cheap. It looks like he just switched out my SIM card and transferred my data over with some wired connection so the change was quick and easy.

Now I just want to buy a phone online. I dont know if its best to just buy it on Amazon, directly from AT&T, Apple or somewhere else. I also dont know if changing my phone is as easy as swapping SIM cards and backing up my phone. I dont know if the phone will just work or if Ill get locked out for some reason

Just call AT&T and say you want a new phone and ask for the best deal possible.
Upload all your stuff to the cloud.
Download it all again with your new phone.

Nothing to overthink. It's a pretty easy process.

They will happily take your money. Just be sure to ask what kind of deals / promotions are going on.

Ive never bought them online. Just gone into the shop to get one. Is there a reason you want to avoid doing that?

Yea its kinda dumb but I do have a reason. Im 34 and still on my parents family account. I keep saying I want my own account but my mom just goes on and on about how I dont need to do that because its cheaper. So I never moved on.

My parents live 4 hours away but last time I went up to the AT&T store to do business my name wasnt on the account. My mom called At&t to add my name but it never showed up. So I was out of luck until the guy that worked at AT&T sold me his wifes phone. That is how I got my current phone.

I dont want to go through all that crap again so Im trying to avoid it

Newer iPhones don't have SIM card slots so you will need to change to an eSIM if you live in the US. Depending on your provider this usually isn't that hard to do. Transferring your stuff to a new iPhone is really easy. You just scan a QR code on one iPhone to the other.

If you want something unlocked without going through a carrier you can buy them unlocked from Apple. Close to Black Friday Target usually has $100 Apple gift cards that come with $15 Target cards. Best Buy usually has the deal as well.

I prefer unlocked phones. It makes it easier to change carriers.
