Ubisoft have always felt comfortable experimenting with gameplay mechanics in the Assassin's Creed series. They've tried standard stealth, larger open-world RPG-driven, smaller bite-size stories and now as we ramp up to Codename Red, we could be getting another overhaul.

Assassin's Creed Red, an instalment set in Feudal Japan and featuring two protagonists, has no release date as yet and other details are thin on the ground. However, according to insiders, we might have a better idea of how the next game in the series will play.

According to new information, it seems that Codename Red will have a lot in common with Elden Ring and other SoulsBorne games. Apparently, developers want to encourage players to explore in a more organic way by removing all those annoying map icons.

One of the best features of the SoulsBorne games is piecing together the world by exploring naturally, straying from any proper path and following your gut. It will be interesting to see if this works in the world of assassins.

This nugget of information came from a reliable source who also uncovered some other tidbits including more about the assassin's equipment, such as a grappling hook, kunai, smoke bombs and bells to distract enemies. There's a real sense this iteration of the franchise is heavily inspired by Sekiro.

Also noted is a 'posture' system that feels very reminiscent of games where parries and blocking takes precedent and players will have to hack away at the posture bar to possibly stagger the enemy or open them up to heavier attacks.

Away from the SoulsBorne comparisons is a 'spy system' which could allow players to establish a spy network to gain information and possibly open up opportunities to attacking targets. Of course, all of this should be taken with a pinch of salt, but given that Ubisoft are happy to play around with the franchise, we could see some big changes.

I'll be curious to see how this turns out, but I hope they realize what makes the souls games work isn't that they take away all of the guides and quest aids, but because you're dropped into a carefully handcrafted world that is explicitly designed to tell a story and guide the player towards where they need to go organically.

If they make some giant procedurally generated world with random bandit camps and a couple of random cities in it, taking away the quest marker isn't going to do what they think it will.

One of the best things about Elden Ring is finding some odd looking structure or marking on the map and going there turns out to be some cool event. Its very simple yet extremely effective.

Ubisoft's take on this will probably having some yellow brick road take you to all the filler content.

I heard something about the other protagonist being a woman, but that was about it.
