Not okay. They're already aware that it's a problem, no need to be an asshole to them. Because if it was easy for them to fix, then it wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

Fat shaming is bad. But fat acceptance is also kinda bad in it's own way. Let's just not talk about people's weight. The person who is 100% most aware of a person's weight is that person....so no need to comment on it.

It's coupled with mental health disorder but no one cares about it enough to do anything about it. Problems you can't see are usually overlooked.

If they're just doing it to be a bastard to someone, then no.

If they care about a person's health, then they'll know that 'shaming' is unlikely to be productive. Wrecking people's self-esteem rarely is.

Its pretty sucky and you should probably reserve your opinions on someone's weight until they ask you for advice themselves.

Body positivity as a movement shouldn't be defended if it defends behavior that will shorten your life by many years and decreases your quality of life anyway.

As for fat shaming though, should lay off that.

It's probably not a good idea on forums where there's a good percentage of fat users. Fat shaming around other skinnies is mostly harmless.

Interesting how many users have to preempt their statements with "What about those who say being fat is healthy?!"

What about them? This topic isn't about that. It's about whatever or not you consider fat shaming to be good or not.

Don't look for the asterisk.

promoting unhealthy lifestyles as 'positive' because you don't want to hurt people's feelings is also bad.

It's not an "asterisk". We aren't saying "yes, you SHOULD fat shame people who say being fat is healthy." We are just raising a parallel point

Also, it should be pointed out that the whole fat acceptance movement started to try to make fat people feel better about themselves. Because:

Fat = bullying and discrimination
Bullying and Discrimination = Depression and higher risk of suicide

There are papers linking obesity to higher suicide rates. Is being obese unhealthy? Yes. Should people with unhealthy habits work on improving that? Also yes. But people take the fat acceptance movement at face value and misunderstand. It's there to help prevent people from feeling worse about themselves and going down that path towards depression and suicide. "They shouldn't be okay with being fat" Okay? But the solution shouldn't be to tear them down. That's not productive.

Agreed.

Absolutely nobody should be humiliated for how they look, however, I don't believe that people should be misled into believing that obesity is "okay" for one's health because it most certainly is not. The thing about fat shaming though, is that it only exists to subject misery on the target. It's bullying by any other name and no, that's not acceptable.

Friends,

I voted " I get it" I meant like I UNDERSTAND the concept..

Not I get it done to me. I am 6 4, 240, 60 years old, bald, 3 chins.

I would feel LUCKY to get any fat shaming.. I get ZERO attention.

I have diabetes, I take 3 different medicines for it.
there is no way I can criticize someone else for the same problems I have.

not cool, We all have demons. Just because you do not see them,
does not mean we don't have them.

Fat people who pretend there's nothing wrong with it are a bit annoying, but the amount of vitriol people have for them online is wild. I wouldn't think fat shaming would be particularly effective, I wonder what the literature says. I think ultimately the motivation to lose weight/get healthy must come from within, not an external source.

it's pretty shitty

i think it's shitty regardless if overweight people state theyre fine with it

the ones who are fine with it can be fine with it when it's directed at them. when it isn't, their stamp of approval means nothing

if the intended goal of fat shaming is getting someone to lose weight, it rarely works and is usually just a shitty way of putting someone down in order to feel better about yourself

fat acceptance and convincing someone/yourself that it's okay to be overweight is ten times worse, however

If shamers were to just go up and say, shame on you!

W-what? ( '-' )

Shame on you... (softer voice)

It would be no recognized specific thing and their mind would be racing. They would pull up their most shameful thing naturally whatever that is and try to be a better person the next morning in some form or another.

I'm just sorta spitballing it here.

Fat shaming is clearly wrong and only exacerbates the problem. Overweight people deserve to be treated with the same base level of respect as anyone else.

The better solution, I feel, is to encourage a healthier lifestyle without shaming overweight people. Obesity itself is a problem, but that doesn't mean the people dealing with it should feel uncomfortable in their own skin. Treat obese people the same way you would anyone else, and if they decide to make a serious effort to lose weight, encourage them through their journey and celebrate each little success.
