I didn't watch Hunter x Hunter but there's no fucking way that the MC's are the worst characters in the other four series. The only one that's even remotely debatable imo is Goku and that's because his ignorance and impulsiveness routinely jeopardizes the well-being of the people that he cares about the most. They have to have latent supernatural talents that haven't been recognised by anyone as yet. They have to be bad with girls, not very smart, morally just in all the most important ways. You can do whatever the hell you want with the side characters, so long as the protagonist remains the generically likable, strong-willed good guy mcheropants with a personality relatable (or at least wish fullfillment) to the largest swathes of the shonen demographic. You aren't a low achiever, you just haven't found your special hidden talent yet. You're not anti-social, you're just a mysterious loner. You'd be a great friend, if only people saw you for what you are. And the power of friendship is probably the most compelling emotional problem for teenagers who are struggling with making friends in middle school. But none of the ones you listed is the worst. Yamcha is probably the worst in Dragon Ball. Sakura is easily the worst in Naruto. Honestly the supporting cast is barely even there in most of HxH so I dont remember anyone being annoying. If any of the Straw Hats are annoying, its probably Usopp. All the characters are likable in YYH, but Kuwabara is probably the least so, especially in the English dub where his voice is super annoying. Hiei is the prototype edgy character, who's there to be "dark & mysterious", and do cool moves. he's just done better than in other series. Kurama's whole thing is he's this "noble guy" with a dark past, who comes off as a bit of a Gary Stu. Him or Yusuke. Assuming kids are righteous and want to protect the weak and shit is stupid. Its why nobody actually likes Goku for his character but because of his cool fights. Give us protagonists with tempers. Ones that procrastinate instead of being bad at academics. Ones that have a disability or something. I dunno. But jesus, I hate the Im a good natured guy that will do anything to protect people and I work hard! People love me once I interact with them!. Its so lame. The best part about Yusuke is that he talks shit when its warranted.
