That seems to be more promising than creating a new functional eye from a tooth, which is a thing.

Interesting. It sounds like it's mostly for cosmetic purposes though, and may never grant any vision so I feel like we're still a ways off. Still cool though.

I'm honestly most excited for what the COVID vaccines can potentially do for curing cancer. Individualized cancer treatments sounds like such a gamechanger to me.

I hope they do eventually figure out a way to restore vision.

I have a twin who will definitely be fully blind by about 40 years old. If someone told me that I could give one of my eyes to him and he'd restore his sight, I'd do it.

When they did the story about this on CBS today, they mentioned part of the guy's brain showed activity when they shined a light into the new eye, so while it's not a sure thing, it's possible he might get his vision back in it one day. His doctor seemed cautiously optimistic about it.

More interested when they come up with a treatment to regrow working optical nerves. That'll be the real deal there, especially for glaucoma patients.

This is an amazing achievement, but at the same time makes me think of all these dystopian sci fi movies where body organs are seen as commodities for the rich to live as long as possible. Sure, its mostly donated for now, but how long until a company comes along working as an organ broker between the rich and the needy.

The article itself says that. It's just a step, but that's how every journey begins. Also he claims to be gaining some sensation in it, so it'll be interesting to see how it's progressed over the next few months.

We've kinda been living it since Steve Jobs got to fly around the country shopping for organs to save him from cancer...

Dental implants seem to be straight superior to teeth though so unless there's a massive cost difference to make regrowing dentin teeth cheaper than implants I don't think this will be a thing.

i guarantee all three of these things will be achieved in the next 10-20 years. well maybe they wont be able to cure aging in the next 10-20 years, but im 100% sure they will be able to slow it down a lot so that when youre 80 youll look and feel 50.
