Honestly, it's not hard to sympathize with innocent Palestinians suffering daily from Israel's constant bombing AND innocent Israelis being used as bargaining chips by Hamas. Why does it have to be a contest over who gets the most amount of sympathy? Social media has only worsened the divide to the point where it's starting to spill in local politics.

Because the same thing both sides! meme has gone too far and is brought up even in cases where there really is no good side. People need to get their tribalism boners soothed, and the easiest way to do that here is to shill for Israel. Which is most pathetic in this case as the majority of people doing so have no affiliation with Israel beyond Im American so I have to swear fealty to both.

I get to sidestep such nonsense as an Australian. Fuck the IDF and fuck Hamas. I have no obligation to support either.

Because caring about both groups would force some people to reevaluate their cartoonish view of morality and politics.

I think there's no problem with having sympathy, but we always have to remember that our very sympathies can be politically weaponized by the very extremes of the people in this conflict.

For example, if a Hamas supporter or a jihadist group uses imagery from pro-Palestinian vigils or marches, it can embolden them to take more terror measures.

The whole ceasefire thing is another example. The moment you call a ceasefire, the Hamas miliants currently holed within Gaza city may find support, whether by physical means or via political, whether Russia or Iran providing aid, into the conflict.

It's best that we allow Israel conduct the surgery as fast as possible and then allow the world to rebuild Gaza and help the people there reintegrate into the world. I think because of the massive focus this conflict has garnered so far, lots of Palestinians from around the world, from free and democratic countries, to go and help rebuild. Perhaps that'll calm the jihadist nerves of those people and never let them rearm to do what they have done to the Israelis ever again.

Edit: Yes, to clarify, Im saying I feel for the innocents caught in the crossfire. Just neither of the combatants.
That's what this topic is mainly for: to discuss about the importance of sympathizing with both innocent Palestinians and Israelis caught up in this horrid conflict. It's painful to see people who care more about one side act all detached and uncaring towards innocents from the other party.

"Both sides" phrase for anything politics wise has been meme'd to death because of people using it in bad faith. So when it's actually applicable in a situation like this, it gets muddied. But yeah this Palestine vs Israel thing is gotten way out of hand. I work in the entertainment industry as a Accountant myself and I'm honestly shocked that I am getting some of these guys flat out confessing to me that they purposely black list anyone that supports Palestine, even saying stuff like Innocents shouldn't suffer from it. On the other side, I actually had some of my Muslim friends having debates against some Muslim extremists about whether or not it is okay to kill Jews for their actions in Israel and using verses from the Quran to support their claims. It's fucking bizarre, it's shit that I would think would come out of a parody video from the Onion or something.

I think part of it is getting your labels in order. Israeli, Jew, Palestinian, Muslim, Hamas, IDF, they all sort of get thrown around that it can be taxing for people to get their facts straight.

Example - only racists seem to have a problem sympathizing with Muslims and Jews. That part seems pretty clear cut and dry.

Where it gets murky though is separating Israeli from Jew, and Palestinian from Hamas, and to an extent IDF from Israeli.

Because it basically comes down to the idea that its easy to sympathize with innocent Israelis and Palestinians - but its also easy to condemn Israeli and Palestinian war criminals like the Israeli Government and Hamas - the labels just get crossed over, and its not always easy to separate your anger and grief from your sympathy with those caught in the middle.

Like I dont think its a hard conclusion to reach to say you want Hamas to be brought to justice and the hostages brought home safe. The price that is being paid to make that happen though, like what do you do?

yeah, too many people act like all Palestinians are Hamas members or supporters, so as soon as you start advocating for their innocents you get labeled an antisemite by certain people

Then just point out that Palestinians are semitic and that they are, only actually true this time, being anti-semitic.
