The whole point of a Critic aggregator is that the average may be better reflective of reality than an outlier. You're criticizing Metacritic for trying to solve the problem you're complaining about.

they should mean you have something about reviews in general, which is something different.

Averaging it out doesn't solve the problem, especially since what the average is of changes. At best its a very flimsy bandaid.

Like always, the best way to get criticism is to find an individual reviewer with similar tastes as you and consult their opinions.

Yeah, that God Hand review was infamous, especially after it was learned they only played three levels. IGN later put it in their list of best PS2 games (at #100, but still in the list nonetheless)

Except that Metacritic doesn't give equal weighting to each reviewer, or to each site. An IGN review would be given more importance, no matter how incompetently it was done, because IGN gets a lot of web traffic.

It's the Cult of Hype. They do their dances and rituals before a game comes out. Watch trailers and preorder based on highly curated content and bullshots. Hype themselves up into a frenzy. Then release is harvest time. The game itself barely matters, because if the reviews are high, it was a good harvest. But blood must always be spilled, to appease the Hype gods. One low review among a sea of high reviews is the typical sacrificial lamb. And if the scores are low, everything must burn.
