People may hate you for two minutes for being spineless before they move on to the next one, but that's better than having them hate you forever and not being able to recover your career. If it's absolutely broached and there is an escape (e.g. if they're walking into a car or whatever), just keep walking because there are probably a dozen other reporters yelling questions so you have all the plausible deniability in the world.
