I think Gunstar Heroes is excellent, Wonder Boy 3 Monster Lair is excellent, Cuphead is very good, and Bells and Whistles is outstanding. Have you played these games? Did you like them?

Even as a kid, I was horrible at shmups. However , me and a friend managed to beat Legendary Wings co-op.

Yeah I posted what I did because TC mentioned Gunstar Heroes but shmups to me are more like Gradius and such games where you are flying.

The former I consider run and gun because they are on foot mostly or some ground vehicles.

Contra and Metal Slug for sure even tho i haven't beaten any of them. >_>

Its currently stuck on the 360 and PS3. At least the 360 version was made BC, but I still would rather be playing this game on either the PS5 or steam deck.

I like both run n' guns and shooter ups. Sunset riders got ported to PSN and the eshop not too long ago but this one kind of went over the heads of mad people lol.

I use the terms shmup and STG interchangeably. The matter of fact is that more people know what you're talking about when you say "shmup" instead of "STG".

As long as you aren't calling them something weird like SCHMUPS (in block-capitals) it's alright.

If it has lolis, yes. Deathsmiles and Touhou are great.

But my brother is a bigger fan and I'm a bit sour on some of the space-shooter ones, because before he eventually got gud with them, it was up to me to do so and some of those games were not fun to get the good ending on. Thunder Force V in particular was pretty grating. Some later UN Squadron stages were annoying too.

If we include rail shooters, well, who doesn't love Star Fox 64? Sin & Punishment on the Wii was good too, despite being fairly long to play through in one sitting and being balls hard because someone told Treasure that they wanted it harder.

Triggerheart Exelica is the one I've played and enjoyed the most by far, though I've also played others like Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and a couple of Touhou games. Lately I've been playing a mobile shmup game called Star Lusts (before you ask, yes, it's an R-18 game) and it's pretty fun.
