BELLEVUE, Wash. Bellevue police are launching an international search for a suspect in a vehicular homicide case after she fled the country.
Police say 26-year-old Ting Ye was the driver in a rollover crash off 108 Avenue South and State 520 back in September. Her passenger, 27-year-old Yabao Liu, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bellevue Police say when she was discharged from Harborview Medical Center on Oct. 9, a friend picked her up and drove her to Vancouver where she took a flight to China.
Its a very unfortunate situation, obviously. We wouldve preferred to arrest her here, Officer Seth Tyler with Bellevue Police said.
Bellevue Police say both Ye and Liu are from China. Ye was in the area on a work visa. Officer Tyler says because there is not an extradition treaty between China and the United States, their hands are tied and they will need help from federal partners to take action.
So that if she ever leaves China, she can expect to be arrested, Officer Tyler said.
Police say not only was Ye going more than 100 miles an hour, but when firefighters pulled her out of the vehicle, she reeked of alcohol.
This vehicle was completely out of control on this road for several hundred feet. So, if there had been any other vehicles on this road, it couldve been even more disastrous, Officer Tyler said.
Ye has been charged with vehicular homicide by the King County Prosecutors Office which requested she be held on a $2 million bail in addition to turning over her passport.
The evidence doesnt change. And so, the crime and why we believe we can prove it beyond a reasonable doubt doesnt change when somebody shows up to court or not. But we are certainly not going to forget about this case, Casey McNerthney with the King County Prosecutors Office said.
Police also say because of what has happened in this case, they will take a deeper look into how they handle cases like Yes going forward.
We are absolutely going to be looking at the procedures that took place here, Officer Tyler said.
Police are now urging her to return and face justice.
We just want her to know that again we take this very seriously. Someone died here. Theres a family involved and she needs to come back and face justice in this matter, Officer Tyler said.
Police are working with Yes employer on the case.

Since the victim is also from China, hopefully Chinese officials want to punish her, too.
Could end up being a best case scenario if she's thrown in jail in China instead of Canada, I have little doubt that the former would be a worse experience.

Wasn't there a case recently where a murderer was in the hospital for injuries and just straight up escaped and it led to a manhunt? I think that was US and this is Canada. But still, WTF is going on? Why aren't they treating these monsters like dangerous criminals that need constant restraint and/or monitoring, just because they have some boo-boos?

They were both Chinese citizens. The driver's back in China and will most likely never try to return.

Don't waste more tax payer dollars on this. Just be glad no one else was hurt and call it a day.

This happened in the Washington state, US. She was just driven to Canada to fly back to China since US authorities would have stopped her at the airport most likely.

I just skimmed through the article. Wasnt her passport held and she had a 2 million bond? Did she fly back via private plane or what. But she'd still have to go through an airport right?

This reminds that the biggest corruptors in my country fled to China and never got caught even for 20+ years.

Ah. So yeah, why the fuck does this keep happening?
Was her victim comparatively as rich as she was? Seems to be the only determining factor on whether she'll actually be punished by China....
I'd hope fleeing justice like this means that if she ever does try to leave China and gets caught, it's an automatic life sentence...

The article's kind of shitty but it says the prosecutor requested that her passport be held.

If she didn't have it she may have been able to get an emergency passport from the Chinese consulate in Canada. Probably why she went to Vancouver where the consulate's located.

Because he doesn't like to face the consequences of vehicular manslaughter and he can't go to Ireland. He's gotta go somewhere.
