wait, i thought that dude from the 80s came back on the ring 2 weeks after the incident. and thanked the medical staffed because of their quick response. am I thinking about the right incident? >_>

Malarchuk lived. Only because the trainer was also like a war doctor who knew how to handle that. He literally put his fingers into the dude's open wound in his throat to pinch the artery.

He absolutely did not. Clint Malarchuk lived and I have a signed copy of his memoirs :)

Oh, if you're talking about Zednik, he also didn't die. And he, also, played for years after his incident. Though Zednik, unlike Malarchuk, was never actually in danger of dying. He left the ice on his own power and they treated him in the back.

Wow, why did his mom say that he died? Let me watch again.

This reminds me of that "close call" near the end of Blades of Glory where one of the men's skates gets so close to the other's neck it shaves a hair out of it.

They have neck guards, but they're not mandatory, I believe.

He is a former Pens player, played a handful of games for the team back in like 2018ish IIRC. I'm not going to say I fully remember much about him but I do remember the goal he scored in front of his hometown crowd (got a lot of cheering in the arena even though the pens were an away team).

I am hoping for the best for him but I....... I dunno man.

There is apparently a video out and I am hoping I never see it. Everyone I've heard who saw it said was not good.

Not that it happens often. But it happens enough times that players should always have a neck guard, imo.

Errant pucks are a constant clear and present danger for major freak accidents. Neck guards should be mandatory.

This is the British police, though, so they won't make any details public until they have finished. There are precedents for people being charged for assaults that occur while playing sport.

Visors were nowhere to be found 20 years ago. Now only a few NHL players are left without one.

And there were simpler times where goalies did NOT wear helmets.

It will happen.

to the modern design with space age padding and protection throughout the uniform and helmet, it takes time and unfortunate tragedies like this to shake up the attitudes of everybody involved to the point where they actually want to innovate and make things safer as a result.

As tragic as this poor guys passing is, and my condolences to his family and friends since this has got to be weighing heavily on them, he wont have died in vain as his demise will ultimately influence changes to help ensure such a preventable accident doesnt happen again.

I haven't seen the video but you can definitely have a lot of weird falls and off-balance slips in hockey in general.

I would need to see the video to determine if it was purposeful, but I kinda doubt that it was.

Fucking crazy that more spectators in the stands have died in nhl games than nhl players in any era in history.

It's why there are huge nets to catch the pucks, now. Someone, a little girl if I recall, got one right one the head as it rocketed into the seats. It killed her, and the response was immediate. Before the season was hardly a week older, there were now nets above the glass.

The guy who did it led the league in penalty minutes and has been suspended before for dirty hits.

Seems the most likely scenario was him trying to commit a foul with his leg, ended up killing the guy instead.

RIP and jail time for the killer.

Leave the martial arts kicking of feet to the soccer/football/rugby players. Not the other pro athletes wearing very, VERY sharp knives on their feet.

Sure was. He was well screened and was out of position to try to stop Johnson from advancing the puck over the blue line. So he negligently stuck his left leg out to stop Johnsons progress. What was going to be a 2:00 minor for tripping ended up killing someone.

I saw the accident for the first time. It was just an awful accident and a bad play for the player to make and just so much blood.

Anyone going and saying the player intentionally was trying to kick him in the neck with a skate is legit fucking disgusting. This dude is going to have the guilt of being the reason this player died for the rest of his life and chucklefucks on the internet are out there trying to claim he intentionally tried to kick a skate into his neck to kill him. (Confirming anyone who has made this comment has never actually played hockey. Probably some of them never even fucking watched hockey.)

What the actual fuck is wrong with the people making this claim.

I'm as outraged as Error on this, and those people are also targeting Petgrave with racist abuse, there really are some messed up people these days
