Like I know it is just the art style but now so much adult animation [at least to me] is just ugly to look at. Like if it isn't just drawn to Invoke grossiness it just looks poorly drawn.

Prime example. I tried to give it a shot for a few episodes because there were some solid jokes, but I couldn't stand to look at it anymore.

Yes. I know because it doesnt have the extra color on the dialogue box

Animation is difficult and time-consuming. My gut tells me that most adult animated series aren't going to have a lot of staying power, so the animation style is a reflection of this; cheap and disposable.

Something like Venture Bros. looks sharp as a knife because the creators wanted to put as much effort into the visual production as they did the writing.

i used to read john k's blog before all of the horrible shit really came to light and this was something he talked about and hated, i think -- he would say that cartoons are either made by cartoonists or by writers.

'adult' animation doesn't need to push any artistic boundaries because it's just a vehicle for jokes.

Being off-brand Rick & Morty seems to have replaced ugly animation style for now in adult cartoons.

Adult Swim has no problem airing low budget garbage

The Amazing Digital Circus looks great. Then again its aesthetic is more in line with kid's cartoons

Now? Thats always been the case honestly. The more mature the content, the more inrealistic and zany the proportions generally.

Im not really sure why, but I guess its easier to avoid controversy if the animation looks silly and people or parents more specifically start complaining.

If a cartoon is going yo be cheap, I'd rather they go with a style like Archer or something. The chatacter designs look alright but the animation itself cuts a lot of corners

This is part of it. The other part is... Most adult animation, unless it's something like Invincible, which is a superhero gig, doesn't need a lot of awe inspiring animation. Look at the adult animation of the past (and present?). King of the Hill, South Park, etc. Most scenes are just the characters standing around talking, so you don't need to break the animation budget even remotely.

I wish more adult cartoons took visual cues from underground comix

I enjoyed Bojack Horseman's animation aesthetic quite a bit as far as more recent examples I can think of. It was simple, but almost had a comic book or drawn with colored pencil feel to it.

The problem isn't that there are no good adult animated shows, its that for every good one there are ten uninspired clones copying what came before. For every Bojack Horseman or Inside Job you have five Big Mouths and Brickleberrys.

On the bright side I do like that we are getting more adult action cartoons then ever. Those were pretty much unheard of. Now we get stuff like Castlevania, Arcane, Invincible, vox machina, even Young Justice season 3/4.

I am always the person who looks on the bright side. Who will look past the trash and toward the good shows. I just wish we would stop paying attention to the trash. Stuff like Valma shouldn't be two seasons and yet because of hate watching it is.

Brickleberry would have been forgotten if Netflix didn't keep allowing the creators to make the same show over and over again with a different setting.
