is a conspiracy to delude the populace into embracing the capitalistic decay of a second holiday in response to the increasing apathy and cynicism towards Christmas consumerism.

Tldr: spooky season is a home depot created conspiracy to sell giant skeletons

I'm sorry what? Just sounds like consumerism to me. Even when I was religious we would celebrate "harvest" in November.

Halloween rocks! It's one of my favorite holidays. Eat candy, dress up, watch fun or scary movies, hand out candy (if possible), etc.
Watch some Hocus Pocus before you start saying it's a fake holiday. It's not what it used to be, but hell, we celebrate a summer birthday on Christmas

Maybe I should state my opinion more plainly, seems many are missing my point.

Have you noticed that within the past couple years it seems like there's a more fervent obsession with Halloween on social media? And people making posts looking forward to it months out, making memes about it while it's still July? And generally those posts are responded to favorably. Contrast that to how most of social media reacts to Christmas decorations being sold in October. If you made a fb post about looking forward to Christmas in September, people would groan at you (and rightfully so imo).

This is because we are burnt out and cynical towards the consumerist nature of Christmas. What society is not burnt out on, is spooky decorations and costumes, candy, and scary movies. Not yet anyway. The jaded cynic in me says that won't be the case in too many years, when people are starting to notice the prevalence of corporate opportunism in regards to exploiting the holiday for more capital.

Tldr: Halloween is the new Christmas from a marketing standpoint

It's probably not so much a conspiracy as it is something that's genuinely popular. It will, of course, be capitalized on until everyone's sick of it being overcommercialized, but that's not a conspiracy so much as it's what capitalism does: Makes money off of something until it stops making money.

no, because I am aware that social media is not an accurate representation of what I see in real life. In my personal life I see less Halloween decorations around the neighborhood than I saw in the early 90s. There are of course a few people that go extravagant and buy whatever the 'latest thing' is; recall the tall skeleton and the tall pumpkin man this year. I'm sure Halloween spending has increased year over year in general though, simply due to population growth.

and it isn't a conspiracy that corporations want to sell things and that the leadup to holidays are good for that.

This a bunch. People need to stop taking social media so seriously. There's a ton of us not contributing to it guaranteeing it's a skewed view of reality.
I hold off as late as i can to decorate cause i love the holiday. i think i made it to the end of September.

Technically no. Our modern conception of Halloween only dates back something like 100 or 200 years.

While I admittedly don't use social media (because, and this is true, fuck social media), I seriously doubt that's the case. People have been making a big deal out of Halloween for a very long time now, thanks to it transitioning to more of an "adult" holiday -- sexy costumes, extreme haunts, etc.

I feel like neighborhoods always going to be 100% anecdotal because they can vary immensely, depending on the number of kids in an area and the individual homeowners. If you have somebody with a lot of Halloween spirit, you tend to get pretty done-up houses because everybody else gets into it, too. However, when an area has few trick-or-treaters and nobody has a lot of spirit, you don't get decorations.

As such, some places will be over-the-top nowadays that had nothing in the 90s and vice versa.

Well put, absolutely, family demographics shift around the town/city/surrounding communities.
