Not completely. I basically just heard and saw the "landing" but not the guy coming all the way down. The crowd of people that did basically collectively gasped and that's what caused me to look.

Unfortunately, I've witnessed a few and some were actual relatives but nothing with that kind of "holy shit" factor. But yeah, my therapist will be hearing about this one.

RIP to that guy. Sorry you had to see that too, TC. That would absolutely be traumatizing.

But normal people shouldnt have to. 1st responders know what they sign up for and prepare for it. Not ever seeing it and having it surprising you is different

Something I've been meaning to ask...when you guys see terrible stuff like TC, do you just treat it like "welp" and do your job? Do you tell jokes about it (like some doctors/surgeons do...or so I heard >_>)? Or do you approach it with seriousness and respect? Or is it all just "whatever, it's a job." <_<

Oh yeah, gallows humor is all over the place lol (and some of the jokes are pretty funny at times >____>). It's definitely a coping mechanism that helps. Everyone handles it differently. I just apply my training and if it wasnt meant to be, then it wasnt meant to be. We all go when our time is up. I dont think any of the calls really bother me unless it involves kids or something >_>

The goriest road fatality I saw was a motorcyclist who had crashed really badly and he was kinda all over the place. The police covered the body with a tarp but they didn't do it very well so you could see part of the body and I saw his (barely there) head. I was 9.

That's awful. The worst I saw was a motorcyclist getting T-boned at high speed by some lady running a red light. I definitely saw the glow of her cell phone screen by her face. The motorcyclist's skull was spilled across the pavement. All he was wearing was a t-shirt and jeans.

It should be a law that companies are required to pay their construction workers / window washers $10,000 a year per floor above the 3rd floor.

pardon my ignorance here, but are window washers not strapped in with some kind of harness or something? what a terrifying way to go, RIP

Damn that's crazy. RIP to that window washer. That's gotta be a horrible way to go.

Hopefully you never have to deal with anything too crazy. I've heard that you do get used to it in general, but there are still some calls that stick with you. Depression among first responders is pretty high.

Can't answer for him but working in a prison we can have a warped sense of humor. Had a guy having a heart attack. As soon as he got on the ambulance captain said thank God not our problem anymore and walked off. Me and another officer started cutting up and joking (not about him)

I've seen exactly one dead body working and at first it kinda hit me cause I had known the inmate for 3 years and had several conversations with him. But then I was like dumbass got what he deserved. He overdosed. He was always getting high.

I think what made it hit me was seeing his sternum caved in from cpr. His chest was concave and he was blue.

Construction workers are supposed to but a lot don't.

Some don't like the harness others have heard horror stories of falling having their back broke and just hanging there for God knows how long sometimes even still dying.

Had a step father who quit wearing them cause he knocked over the rail and went unconscious and hung there for hours. He worked alone he had nobody coming to help him. He decided he'd rather risk a quicker death than a slow one.

I'm not a first responder, but working in the OR for years and seeing the end result of many types of accidents, and now working in a cancer hospital, we absolutely use dark humor as a coping mechanism. I'm surrounded by death, and reminded of it constantly, so I've just developed a sort of numbness over the years. My uncle was a firefighter and him and his firehouse were the same way...nothing was sacred.

Worst I've see was when riding in a car on the highway. We came across a wreck where one of the cars was flipped upside down, and you could see a guy in that flipped car that wasn't moving. No idea if he was actually dead or just unconscious, but it was unsettling to ride past that.

Sorry you had to witness that TC, and RIP to that guy.

I have a buddy who works as a window washer in the city. He doesn't do the huge skyscrapers, but still high enough that if he fell he's not likely to survive. I couldn't do that shit.

Death is inevitable and completely unpredictable. There's a realistic chance you'll come across it at least once in your lifetime. It doesn't have to be traumatizing. It's an inevitable part of reality.
